I saw a bloke wearing some recent Manly merchandise, and who was one of the sponsors: Strathfield Car Radio's.
NRL or Telstra? I mean, if Telstra wanted that as part of ponying up $12 Million to sponsor the league then what was the NRL to do? Hold out for the other $12 Million prospective sponsors to agree to a deal without that sort of agreement?
Get real Timmah...there are only so many companies with the sort of budget to pay that sort of cash and the NRL are hardly in the position where they can dictate terms.
Unfortunately AFL have absolutely no trouble in finding sponsors. I believe Toyota ended up paying overs in taking over from CUB to become major sponsor of the AFL. They literally had companies queueing up to be the major sponsor.
If I remember correctly we had to go public in a search for a major sponsor to convince Telstra to re-sign. Might be wrong, but I don't think I am. In sponsorship the AFL is in a different stratosphere mate. They choose who they want, we take what we can get.
The insider also revealed that the AFL was threatening to take Melbourne to court over the club's sponsorship deal with tyre manufacturer Hankook. The AFL was reportedly furious because the Demons neglected to check if Qantas used the Korean-based company's plane tyres.
"When Qantas found out Melbourne had signed Hankook tyres, well, they were really cross and got straight on the blower to Andy. You see, Qantas don't use Hankook. Andy then got really cross and he was straight on the blower to Ed.
"Well, Ed was absolutely filthy and chucked one of his 'don't-mess-with-me' tantrums because Emirates don't use Hankook tyres either.
Given the current financial climate marketing and sponsorship is a hard sell to any company.Well given the way the bulldogs have turned things around I doubt they'll have trouble finding another solid sponsor.
