Wow, Dogs fans were saying they were cleared a day ago, based on one still shot...

Decisions like this happen for a reason - I'm not sure that automatic sooking is justified, but will be interesting when the decision and reasons are in print for all to see.

If it's fair, I have no problem with it. But I think it has to be put into context like the Broncos one was, in that one player was leaving the field of play, and the other joining it. Not like 14 were actually playing. I believe this is how the Broncos got around it, and got off with a fine instead.

EDIT: Actually thinking back, the Cowboys one, which resulted in the 2 points being taken off, was due to 14 players actually being involved in the play for approx 30 secs. The rest were similar to our situation.

as a panther supporter i think that a bit tough.Perhaps the ref should have lost his 2 gonads for the wrong decision on the no try to sammut.Still bulldogs can appeal and should win

Yeah. Panthers didn't lose the game because of 14 players. We lost the game because the referee penalised us for scoring a fair try under the posts. He made the mistake and didn't call held. Nor should he have called held.

Bulldogs set to lose two competition points for extra player on field

By staff writers
March 23, 2009 The Bulldogs will lose two premiership points after breaching the replacements (interchange) rules against Penrith on Saturday night.
A breach notice will be issued alleging the club had fourteen players on the field when the match-levelling try was scored in the final moments of the match.

"It's a regrettable decision to have to take but the interchange process is clear and no interchange can take place without it being followed," NRL chief David Gallop said.

The Bulldogs will have five business days to enter submissions in relation to the breach notice before the penalty is confirmed. Until then the club remains on four competition points. In any event, the Panthers will not be awarded the competition points.

A detailed viewing of the 'eagle-cam' video and other angles this afternoon cleared the club of suggestions of an improper interchange between Ben Roberts and Andrew Ryan in the 78th minute.

However, it showed clearly that when Michael Ennis was on the ground with an injury, Ryan (having previously left the field) re-entered from the 'far' touchline and rejoined play without abiding by the interchange process and with Ennis still being treated.

Ryan took a position in the attacking line during the try-scoring play with Ennis still on the field and with the Bulldogs therefore having 14 men.

"When the media first raised this matter the speculation was around the Roberts-Ryan interchange," NRL COO Graham Annesley said.

"This always appeared to be conducted properly but we could not confirm that until we received extra vision today.

"In the process, however, it became clear that after Andrew Ryan left the field on the far side and was walking away from the play, he then appeared to be called back on by a trainer.

"There are clearly fourteen men on the field when the try is scored."

If that happened in a finals game the losing team would go through to next weeks final, but in the normal round the losing team gets no points, its not class as a win, so why are the finals rules different again.

The match should be replayed if there is no winner

Exactly, what's doing with the interchange officials allowing this to happen?

INTERCHANGE ERROR on SATURDAY NIGHT
Todd Greenberg
Mon 23 Mar 2009

The Bulldogs have acknowledged that an interchange error was made during Saturday night’s match against Penrith however the Club will explore options to contest the severity of the breach notice.

“We’ve viewed the footage with the NRL and accept that we had 14 players on the field for a short period of time. We are now considering our ability to appeal the decision to deduct the Bulldogs of two competition points,” said Chief Executive Mr Todd Greenberg.

“The loss of points is an extreme punishment and the Club will investigate all options to appeal the breach notice.”

You lost the game because you had sweet FA in attack

Given previous the Broncos precedent, this is an absolutely ludicrous punishment. The NRL are basically saying we deliberately flouted the rules, which is absolutely ludicrous.
