Guys, I regret to inform you that supporting the Warriors for over thirty years has finally taken its toll. Therefore, I'll be following rugby union this year - the Canterbury Crusaders in particular - and will no longer suffer through another Warriors season...
...I thought I'd start off with a bit of humour, we might need it this year, like we do every year, but were back for another year at Mt Smart and I can't wait till next Friday!
Till then, it's Las Vegas this weekend. OK, I thought this was a one-off but then (I think it was Beave who confirmed it'll go for five years). What good's it doing rugby league? Knights v Cows kicks it off and I hope Lodgy doesn't kick-off again now he's back in the US. So much for Trump's strict border crackdown, I was a little stunned to see his name on the Cowboys team-list. Both sides need wins, they struggled last year, and Payten might've been lucky to survive, unlike his Knights counterpart.
'Dogs do Vegas'. How's that for a crass new TV show? Send them over for Mad Monday and let loose. Isn't this what we want from our incursion into America, some new business opportunities? The Bulldogs should do the Dragons though and with Gus stalking the Strip no player's safe from a chat about coming over to Belmore.
Thursday, part two. The season starts for real. Last October, there I was, feeling sorry for Bellamy, the Ghost of Coolangatta. He looked lost, haunted. I was on my annual week's holiday up there, a supermarket worker taking a break. Yet I felt sorry for him! The last few months showed that was misplaced. I hope Parramatta upset them and the Lomax farce makes it perfect timing. What foresight from our Canadian algorithm. Knowing Melbourne though, they'll come out angry and put fifty on them, ending the Eels premiership hopes -after forty years - in round one.
Friday, we're back. After all these years the magic never dies. Hope! (Not 'belief', we're done with that one). But what's changed since last season, when we knew we wouldn't beat the top sides? So we've signed up again, with a strong - and realistic - hope that we'll make the eight. That's a big change from those thirteen years without Webby. The Chooks are good though, will Daly lead them to glory? Seven years with no premiership is a long time for a club that expects a lot from their Bondi brand. Daly knows how to beat the Warriors too, and if he's playing, it'd be the perfect start. Those bloody Canadians, eh?
What's the difference between an Echidna and Nathan Cleary? The latter is still marked as an Australian protected species. It was always not happening, him not being there in Brisbane on Friday night, prime-time. As if the Broncos' rock stars weren't enough. Walsh has cut his hair I noticed. Subscribers to Reece TV might've been all over that one. See why I take the summer off?
Saturday, the real craic. You know the season's began when it's the middle of the weekend and the footy's on. Cronulla should bolt it in over the GC, after all, big Addin's playing for an Origin spot now, and Manly? Back at Brookie, against last year's big finals disappointers, Canberra. No Daly after 15 years!
We close with the Dolphins hosting Souths. Surly Cody and Latrell are still there, they're supposed to be match-winners, but, so far even Ol' Wayne hasn't found consistency there. Redcliffe are still hungry and new, with pace to burn. That should get them the win at home.
Tigers with the bye. It's one of two times this year I'll tip them. (Seriously though, they look quite good, and that joke might not be - all that - funny anymore).
Enjoy!
