Round six, more fascination. Or will we just have a predictable, run-of-the-mill, round of footy? Whatever that means this year.

Tonight, Dogs v Panthers. You know the fifty-point doomsday figure? There's been a few this year already, side's have been rubbed-out almost before their season's begun. But you know what? This year it only has real relevance to Penrith. They're the side that are going to win the premiership, the rest of us are just there. Fifty put on Penrith would be the shock we'd all want to see. It's not happening tonight though.

Friday, the Dragons are due. How many games can you go without a win? (I know, ask Bluey McClennan) But, seriously, starting a season is different. The win will happen, soon. Unfortunately, Manly are back. So more pain for the Red V faithful.

Broncos v Cowboys. The (reasonably) old Qld classic. These two have history. No Walsh but Arthurs is a handy replacement. NQ are flying, it could be 2015 all over again.

Saturday, I can't imagine life without the three goodies. In Perth, Souths host a panicking Canberra, and the Sharks will find out if they've really found form against Easts, and, it's heart in mouth stuff for Warriors fans, down in Melbourne. Bellamy won't waste a second targeting our dodgy right-side defence. We may get lucky though, the Storm are shaky and an off night is not out of the question. I know where I am at 7:30 pm though. This is being ridden with beer!

Sunday, Parra v Titans. Poor Eels fans, I watched the local ones exit the RSL last Sunday forlornly. How much more can they take? We close with two v three, yep, Tigers v Knights. That's why this season is so fascinating.

Enjoy!

So we have stopped a game, and gone back a min or to sin bin McLean for high contact, but the guy he hit doesn’t need an HIA

Of course.

This is also a Gerald Sutton game so expect a sprinkling of senility throughout the game.
How does he still have a gig ? Is it his mate Klein in the box

That penalty for the head clash on Mann was absurd, and the fact they placed it on report

22-16, Dogs. But they've missed a couple of chances to extend that lead. Penrith are obviously still in it.

22 mins left. Three chances now blown by Dogs. They're tempting fate against a champion team.

OK Bunker, it should not have been penalised, but it slipped high and wasn't foul, but to the letter of the law, penalty.

Ok Bunker, put your finger on the ball as it touched the shoulder and see if it appears towards the Dog or Panther or doesn't appear? Ill let you know it went to ward the Panthers eg backwards.

Four turnovers now by the Dogs since being up 22-16.

...just as I write that they finally score. 28-16, Dogs. Ten mins left...
Penrith look a bit flat.
...Dogs take another two points. 30-16. They've won, I think.

Bulldogs with fast moving defence, getting up in their faces, forcing errors. Is this how you beat Penrith? It worked tonight. 32-16, Dogs. Final.

Blayze Talagi has been absolutely pitiful tonight
Yea man he had a shocker. He's a good front on defender, so a lack of commitment isn't his problem but gees he had a bad night.

There was an article published in Code sports yesterday by Read and Carayannis, they asked coaches how to beat the Panthers and they came up with 5 things, the last one being:

5. CHALLENGE THEM WITH YOUR BACKROWERS

Penrith’s attack has been getting all the plaudits over the opening five weeks of the season but their defence has been equally dominant. One coach told this masthead that teams fall into the trap of thinking they can go around the Panthers. It’s a cardinal sin.

“They press up real high – most coaches refer to it as the high line,” a coach said.

“Then they sit down at the high line. So you’ll see them like real square body position. So it’s like a bit of an illusion to play around them, because it looks like there’s space

“If you go and watch the game they played against Parramatta, when the Eels were moving the ball to the right, they had about five on two or three on the edges a few times.

“But Penrith’s ability to go laterally is the best that I’ve seen because they hold their nerve and they don’t panic.

“Other teams get nervous and they just collapse.”

That’s the technical part of it. The brutal side of it, this coach insists, is that you need tackle busting back rowers to make an impact by running at the Panthers’ centres and halves.

“You can’t just go five hit-ups because they’ll rest their head off,” he said.

“But if you can combo up your passes …. that’s when you can catch them. If you catch them sitting down, you can crash through or break their line.

“Does Reece Walsh pass round them or go through them? You have to break tackles to score tries against them – you’re not going to get clean line breaks.

“To play that style, you need people who break tackles. The good teams with back rowers or fullbacks or halves who are running, they are the ones who are challenging them.

“If you don’t have those back rowers to crash through that hole, they are going to swallow you because they say sit there and hold their nerve.

“They’re so patient, enticing you to go around them.” That’s their strength – they can move fast.”
