Yeah, think Johns et al were discussing it the other day, the role of the wing has changed - it's much more important now, whereas centres are an afterthought - but back then wonderful footballers like Miles, OConnor, ET, Ella etc were in the centres, and while Grothe could have done the modern role, he didn't...Apart from his goal kicking, Halligan was only good for sneaking a try in the corner every now and then. Can you imagine him taking a hitup like todays wingers do? Times have changed.

Halligan had a great career though, and I think he was an afterthought in the Simonsen deal
Innes was one that went under the radar a bit - quality AB and excellent league centre - like John Schuster, probably could have been a great at either, but ended up not quite being a great in either code - probably because they shifted mid career rather than early or late
Just found this on Papworth - interesting how he mentions the contact in league vs the highest level of union - back then anyway
