mind boggles really when you earn what he has earned for a long time

He was on, what 850-900k while at the Roosters? So probably netting 45-50k p/m after tax etc. more with a smart accountant.

Obviously a lot of money to piss away, but from what I've heard its not uncommon. Not just the gambling itself but actually going into debt.

I have a nephew in Sydney who's really tight with a regular first grader with one of the clubs out west. The dude is a pokey and track fiend and is literally broke within a week of getting paid. Regularly hits up his mates for loans despite earning 2-3 times more than most of them.

This isn't uncommon in the slightest. Young men, too much time, too much money, little life experience, no ability to make long-term, wise decisions, and also attuned to trying to match the rush they get from footy.

Steve Price was one notable one that gambled away hundreds of thousands, if not millions early in his career.

I am sure it happens less with clubs being more proactive in education, mentors etc nowadays but clearly it does still happen. Managers should be more involved, as well. I remember reading that Benji's manager had full disclosure over all his bank accounts and demanded accountability on how his money was spent. Maybe that's an overreach, but it's certainly better than the worst case.

Clearly the guy has zero self control, in any aspect of his life. There's only one club in the comp he could have been mildly successful at, and luckily for him he landed there first. If he'd not got to Melbourne, I doubt he'd have made 20 games.

I've worked as a private practice accountant.

People give you every document, bank statement and receipt they have to try and save a cent of tax.

It was super common in the second generation of wealthy families for atleast one of them to just burn money gambling. I used to see multiple $500 withdrawals a night every week at the casino on some bank statements. These were usually the talentless progeny hidden in the marketing department of the family business.

Some people just can't help themselves especially if they get access to money at a young age.

If your accountant and pharmacist (people lie to their GP) ever got married they'd know all the dirt on someone.

You’d think also that if you were a team mate, you would be questioning why a guy on more money than you is asking for a loan

Tino with some pointed comments about accountability at the Titans…
He should have delivered that speech into the mirror. Big words, little meaning. He's the million dollar man, the captain, and yet most people in footy and outside question whether he has an ounce of leadership in him.

The Gold Coast are waiting for a super coach, to transform then, when they should be sorting their culture out and bringing people in who will drive it themselves. Anyone who gets a big fat contract there should be someone of the mana of Mitch Barnett, who refuses to lose. Tino doesn't seem to overly care, even if he wanted us to believe he does as per that speech.

Yeah, Gould said similar the other night, and I said it a few pages back - Cartwright, Henry, Brennan, Holbrook and Hasler all have one thing in common - THEY'RE GOOD COACHES , only Hos managed a respectable record in that joint - coaches haven't been the problem...

It's horse shizen, really. I think it was Beav that said here that the word is that the Board and owners are the issue, that they're an absolute basket case.

As a new coach you'd be thinking do I really want to go to the GC, and will my name forever be tainted with failing at that club? I don't think any of those five have/will coach in the NRL after going to Robina.

With the GC being a notorious death-bed for sport in general the NRL is in a pickle. With about 3/4 of a million people living up there, in a league-playing state, it must have a team.

However, performance-wise, that team is mostly a failed franchise.
