NRL Rd 26 2024 - General Non-Warriors Thread

I tipped the Titans, knew that was wrong when I saw the team list flash up pre game !

Comp changing day with Sam Walker, Brandon Smith and Victor Radley all seemingly having their seasons cut short

Couldn’t have really scripted the final round much better

Cowboys v Dogs playing off for 5th spot. The loser potentially losing a home final if Manly can beat the Sharks next Sunday

Dolphins v Knights, straight shootout for 8th spot, unless they draw after 90 mins then the Raiders and Dragons are still in the hunt and playing each other

And we can’t forget about spoon bowl between the Tigers and Eels

Needless to say the 'Shaun Johnson Farewell Tour' has hit the road. It's feeling a bit like a Johnny Farnham farewell.
It was a tremendous finale. Like when I saw Crowded House outside the Sydney Opera House in '96, it was perfect.

Crowded House came back, Shaun Johnson won't...

The ellipsis is intentionally forboding.

The thing is he's 33 (34 this month). He's lost time. If he doesn't like retirement next year he'll be 35/36 in the following. I think it's over.

from the post match presser, it sounded like he had some media committments on the side brewing but was also planning to set up some sort of academy to coach young playmakers. Might also have some specialist role within Warriors. But nothing confirmed.
at one stage when he was breaking down the last play it was almost like an unprompted interview for the sky sports commentary team. Wouldnt take much to improve that outfit to be fair.

I feel guilty saying this but it’s my favourite time of the league season, when i can enjoy the weekend’s games as pure entertainment, free of the depression or foreboding associated with the Warriors.

It's all set up for an exciting final round.

A few more wins and we were in that mid-table mix. Let's have the Storm in round two, Canterbury and Canberra away. Thirty-one points, home and hosed.

Also notable that if you take that aberration against the Titans put we’d be pretty much back to zero in for and against. Shows how much of an “almost, but no cigar” season it was for us, as well as a few other sides.

My Tigers mate is fully on board with this. He almost had a breakdown before, during, and immediately after, Wests last finals game.

Krisnan Inu juggled that Johnson bomb...

It's much better knowing others are suffering.

I really don't feel that way. We're five points out of the 8.

cant remember if it is in this thread or not but shout out to the Billy Birmingham podcast again.
I just finished listening to the whole thing on my last 2 commutes.
Having lost all the old tapes for WWOS and 12th man, it was a trip down memory lane.
My favourite bits among many were the bit where they added on itch and ski onto everything. Genius.
Digaditch, sonofabitch, f**kyouyoubitch, goalavich, goalski, 2 nil ski, englands in the shit ski. lol.

I’ll probably have another listen today haha, it is so good. Love how easily he slips into the old voices like Theo Fuconopolous etc. That clip where he’d cut all the swear words and stitched them together got me “leso’s”

I had the first cassette in '84 (thanks mum, for buying that for a fourteen year old! Although, she wouldn't have known about the swear words).

'Eees-a-far-kar'! (Pakistan had toured Australia in the '83/84 summer).

Billy and me drifted apart till about 2002 when a flatmate had another cassette. This one had a splendid version of our very own Martin Crowe, as part of a Nine 'commentary team'.

'I'm reeely pussed off, ayyy'. In his best whiny voice.

James Maloney sacked by the cowboys after being done DUI

Different rules for star players that stuff up though, like Holmes earlier this year

That's a weird approach. We all know you didn't sack Holmes, in fact you gave him a one-game ban, yet Maloney is sacked. I don't mind being sacked for DUI but that clearly shows a significant inconsistency. Maybe they wanted Maloney gone, ala Kevin Proctor's vape at the Titans

Yeah you’d imagine Payten and Maloney weren’t seeing eye to eye on footy stuff so this was an easy out

Could be but Maloney's a pretty open book isnt he.... certainly doesn't hide his approach to life or the game, so Payten cant have been too surprised with what he got. Plus they've clearly improved from last year and I cant imagine Maloney didnt have at least something to do with that.

Unless it was more Lucky's idea to bring him than Payten?
