As I saidLC funding is just as legit as any other income, but the reality for most of the clubs that are unsustainable without it is that this funding is reducing year on year. Look at St's and Tigers, two clubs who are in a financial mess due to leagues clubs not being able to support them, Sharks would be another if they hadn't had assets to sell off. Panthers despite a massive leagues club empire make significant losses after the leagues club grant. Reality seems to be for most clubs that they are on the borderline, one lost sponsor, bad year in memberships or poor performance of a leagues club and they are in the sht. Which clubs have the real potential to develop a paying fanbase and corporate support base to sustain them through tough times is the real question the NRL should be looking at.
NRL choices
The Aleague model - cut and run if someone is failing and use the franchise space to open up a more potentially lucrative market
The AFL model prop the failures up but don't let it get in the way of expansion
The ESl model - cut the weak teams and redistribute the wealth to fewer mouths
The NRl model (to date) - bail out the failing clubs at the expense of expansion
