Yep but there is plenty of money in the game to compensate that. Either we value test footy or we don’t.

Of course but the players don't want it to come out of their pocket.

Sponsors won't jump on until the product is there, the players looking for a longer term CBA doesn't help for stuff like this

When the dust settles I just hope Int football gets the stage it deserves.

I'd hope for players to be paid equally, take Haas for example, before the WC he was switching every day between Samoa and Australia. For players where it's a 50/50 decision the Kangaroos will always have the advantage if they are paying the players 20k compared to Samoa's 2k.
International football has real potential now

Tonga vs samoa is a massive game

the kiwis side on paper is on par if not better than Australia

can’t wait for this years tests such a shame tonga are going to England instead of playing here

stupid poms always want teams from the sh touring to prop up their game

I'm happy Tongas gone over to help England. But in saying that England needs to help France out so they can be competitive. France also doesn't help themselves when they don't release there top players to play for their national team which is a joke.
Kangaroos are on the same boat too by not taking the international game seriously

Boycott hasn’t worked abdo has stood firm

the arlc should call their strike bluff the game is strong enough to deal with the fallout
Yeah, why try to negotiate when you can just force a strike - that sounds like a much better plan for the game.

The game would survive, but it'd be damaged immensely.

Tbf, Clint handles himself pretty well here.
Newton comes across as pretty level headed and reasonable.

The 3 issues he raises is GPS information, the length of the season and the RLPA receiving 4m in funding.

Surely there's more to it ? I can't imagine the nrl has a problem with those 3 issues.

That is my thoughts too

I agree. The nrl also needs to come out and say the reasons they've disagreed with those changes.
Both sides are at fault here

There isn't that much money in the international game
Thats why it must be invested from other areas

To try and seperate it from NRL & SOO opens up issues, until a regular InRL TV product is there to sell

Anyway broadcasters kept it merged together in their deal

Plus you have FTA anti-syphoning laws here in Australia for test matches

So at $40k per player thats $1.5 mil in 36 player payments. Before you pay for venues, accodation etc

I think that is the crux of the issue. NRL would heap all rep games even All stars together. RLPA are after further breakdowns.

seems to be a major roadblock having different interpretations

The international game won't be able to grow unless both the NRL and the ESL competitions are reduced in length. Regardless of what people think, the human body needs time to rest and recover, so adding more and more games will not improve the quality. It will do the reverse and lilely to see an increase in injuries or burn out to your elite players.

As such I think the RLA have a point on this.

In relatiopn to the RLPA funding, from some reason the NRL provides the funding direct to them. Every other Union I know of, members pay their fees direct to the Union itself or (in rarer occasions now via payroll deduction). It is not funded by the employer. FYI - A lot of unions abandoned pay roll deductions after a number of Governments ended payroll deductions of union fees without telling the effected staff, nor the Unions (it was to try and make themn insolvent).

the rlpa has said they are funded by the players not the NRL. so isnt it on the players to come up with the funds to run the rlpa?

No, he explained it. $100k comes out of each team's salary cap, and the rest was the NRL buying the commercial rights for players, so the RLPA couldn't sell image rights to get sponsorship. The NRL capped their funding at $3m, so if they get more from players, they get less from the NRL and still can't get sponsorship.

During covid that cap dropped to $2m, and now they are putting it back to $3m. The RLPA will get the 100k from the Dolphins, and presumably some from the women's team's, but all that does is cut back the portion the NRL are contributing. So despite the fact that there are significantly more players, the NRL are buying their image rights at a lower price.

How the RLPA ever agreed to that in the first place is beyond me.

so its 100k of the salary cap which otherwise would go to the players if not the rlpa, the players need to up that amount not the nrl increase the cap to accomadate it . if i pay my union fees they come out of my pay, my employer doesnt pay them for me.

the commercial rights is a seperate deal which on face value seems cheap

I can’t see players striking with the competition so close, it’d bugger up momentum of teams, and if they do strike, can the QLD/NSW Cup players step up to play NRL?

The NRL linked the 2 by setting a limit to what they would pay above what the players contribute. So even if the players came to an agreement that they'd contribute 200k per team, the agreement with the NRL now says they get commercial rights for free. It'd make no sense for the players to agree to it.

It's pure greed and scummy behaviour from the NRL.
