NRL Salary Cap/CBA -2023 - 2027

the problem I have is it appears the players are happy to value their players union when it is paid for by the NRL.

I wonder how much the top players would value the Union if it was voluntary and paid for as a percentage of all players salaries, similar to taxes.

Players are consistently ripping the sport off of further opportunities to develop and grow the game both at home and abroad.

First 18 minutes is about the RLPA issues with Wade Graham, Aaron Woods and Anthony Maroon. Graham is switched on about the issues, whlist Maroon allows the others to talk, unlike the guys from Triple M.

Ripping the game off? The players told the nrl they can have 300m on top of revenues and other stuff so they can use that money to invest in the game. Do you talk out of your ass and not research before you speak?

The players are holding the sport to ransom. The top players are more than suitably remunerated and I certainly don’t think the players deserve as high a percentage of the sport’s income as they receive.

They are getting the best deal they can. They are the sport, at nrl level. They put their bodies and long term health on the line to bring in the nrls money. Good luck to them I say, get what you can.

This is exactly why it’s paid for directly out of the salary cap, because the take up was so poor, the RLPA didn’t have enough funds to staff it appropriately, and not enough members to have any sway - this way, it’s paid for upfront and all players are covered. Which is why it is rich when the RLPA bitch and moan about their funding - if I were the NRL, I’d say ‘no problem, go back to a membership model and see how ya go’.
The thing that narks me is the RLPA act as though the NRL is some sort of sweatshop factory who are guilt of exploiting vulnerable workers - when in reality the players are better consulted, paid, looked after in all senses than EVER, the game is in the best shape ever, pulling in more money than ever, which allows the players to be the best paid they have ever been, yet they never give the NRL any credit, and act like the NRL are treating them like shit - when in reality, without the NRL, the vast majority would be in low paid manual jobs, or locked up, or worse…. I reckon more than 99% of people out there would like to work under the same terms and conditions as an NRL player.
It’s about time they showed some humility and respect for what the NRL does for them.
PVL and Abdo are trying to do what is best for the game, whilst still looking after the players as well as possible, they’re not looking for personal gain or financial benefit - the players are being selfish, greedy and ungrateful for what they do have!
And just on the international piece - who’s paying the Kangaroos when it’s an IRL (or superleague) organised game? Are they expecting the NRL to pay, even though the NRL makes no money from it? Are they gonna piss and moan if it’s not the same pay? Will they refuse to play?

If the nrl wants to do what's best for the game why won't they let the RLPA have access to a full audit on the profit that they make every year? Don't the players deserve to know how much the game generated every year?? I mean the players are the product. Without the players there is no nrl if you want to take that route.

Both sides ego is delaying everything. But the nrl hid $28m from the players last year and that's when the trust broke down

Players are entirely replaceable - they’re the current custodians, that’s all, the current mob will soon all be retired and will have been replaced by a new generation, and as such they’re being given waaaaay too much of a say!
They’re not businessmen, they’re not administrators, they’re in the main, dumb ass rugby league players - they should be consulted, to garner their opinions for the NRL and independent commission to consider, but they should have ZERO actual sway on how the game is administered, governed and ran as a business. That’s the whole point of an independent commission- people making decisions on the future of the game, purely in the best interest of the game as a whole.
Look at any other successful corporate business - front line staff (the players here) are always essential, the business cannot function without them, they should be consulted, but they rarely have decision making capability, and certainly don’t have the ability to ‘veto’ anything. They may have strong unions, but ultimately, the business leaders make the decisions, and the front line staff crack on with it.
The NRL is hardly treating them like shit. The players need to get a grip!
The NRL should use this as an excuse to rip up the whole ‘partners in the game’ profit sharing bollocks and go hard-line - f**k em, you may lose 1 or 2 to a different sport (but highly unlikely), but the vast majority would stay and play under new terms, as in reality, they’re gonna earn nowhere near the same money anywhere else, and would have nowhere near as favourable conditions! Seriously, f**k em, the ungrateful shits.

In relatiopn to the RLPA funding, from some reason the NRL provides the funding direct to them. Every other Union I know of, members pay their fees direct to the Union itself or (in rarer occasions now via payroll deduction). It is not funded by the employer. FYI - A lot of unions abandoned pay roll deductions after a number of Governments ended payroll deductions of union fees without telling the effected staff, nor the Unions (it was to try and make themn insolvent).
NRL did this as players were opting out

And they wanted to create a stronger RLPA

No, he explained it. $100k comes out of each team's salary cap, and the rest was the NRL buying the commercial rights for players, so the RLPA couldn't sell image rights to get sponsorship. The NRL capped their funding at $3m, so if they get more from players, they get less from the NRL and still can't get sponsorship.

During covid that cap dropped to $2m, and now they are putting it back to $3m. The RLPA will get the 100k from the Dolphins, and presumably some from the women's team's, but all that does is cut back the portion the NRL are contributing. So despite the fact that there are significantly more players, the NRL are buying their image rights at a lower price.

How the RLPA ever agreed to that in the first place is beyond me.
Why would the admin of the RLPA need so much money to run the RLPA?

They do

Its called the Annual Report that all companies must undertake for ATO reasons

There is a link to its summary, and there will be a supporting full financial report available as required by the ATO

I expect this will happen every year, as revenue sources change throughout the year

Many if these items only get finalised as the end of year finances and addressed and reconcilled

Anyone know what was the amount actually for?

$4m really isn't a lot of money to support 27 teams and 900 players.

I agree this is a seperate issue being muddled up with the RLPA admin costs

But what is it and how does it differ from the player 3rd party agreements which is not capped

But it's directly related to their admin costs because the NRL are putting a limit on their funding.

The players aren't going to strike because it will go down like a lead balloon with the fans. And although there is no NRL without players, the actual fact is that there is no NRL and no money without the fans.

This posturing by Newton is just that.
