Nrlceo 2011?

tbh i'm quite happy with anything between 8 and 12 teams... there are advantages and disadvantages to both. on the one hand, having lots of teams definitely rewards a good draft strategy and also brings boom rookies and whatnot into the equation. having few teams obviously produces a more even competition. an even draw is definitely nice, but not essential. i'm happy to roll with whatever.

main reason for people losing interest was because the player base was thin

i vote 10 but with smaller squads say 20

Squad's of 20 would mean that we only have 3 subs, would get VERY messy through bye weeks. I think what we did last year (10 teams, squads of 25) was perfect. Noone in Lu1 lost interest save for you and Pumba, I don't think it's as big an issue as everyone thinks. We have formed a dedicated bunch of guys.

Firstly Johnsy, I think the main point of the "screening" process we are going through in terms of choosing dedicated coaches will go a long way towards weeding out those who would pull out if their team was struggling. Obviously nothing is foolproof, but we can only do our best to preempt that and I don't think the size of the league will really affect whether it happens or not.

Secondly, here's an idea I would like to float to everyone:
If the issue with 10 teams is playing teams an uneven number of times, there ARE four rounds preceding the Anzac test and Origins(Rounds 9, 11, 14, and 17) where strings of NRL clubs have byes. Those who played last year will know these are generally pretty crappy rounds for NRLCEO because everyone fields half teams.

Is there a way we can structure the draw so that all teams have byes in these weeks, cutting the number of regular season rounds down from 22 to 18, meaning in a 10 team competition every team would play each other twice? The regular season would still end after Round 22 like last year and we could still hold a four week finals series from Rounds 23-26.

In short, it would be the exact same as last year except we cut out the four messy rep rounds so everyone plays each other twice.

So I guess there are two issues here:

1. What does everyone else think of this idea?

2. Mig, could we structure the draw(either ourselves or through your own helpful manipulation) so that there are four "frozen" rounds where everyone has byes, and then the draw picks up where it left off(e.g. If I was set to play Monk in Round 9 I would instead play him in Round 10)?

A couple of if's in there, but I'm very keen to hear feedback from all parties.

I love this.

A good idea JM but as all comps (both public and private) are run on the same set of stats and programming, I dont think it is an option to freeze the byes rounds out.

Cheers Mig, I suspected as much.

Why don't you see how many dedicated coaches you get first and then base your comps around that number. In 2012, you could then streamline each comp according to finishing positions in 2011. 2011 would therefore become somewhat of a qualifying year for a champions league. Just a thought.

We sort of already are doing that with the relegation system.

The only issue now is how many teams we have in each league, and thus how many leagues we want to create(meaning how many coaches we want to find to fill the numbers).

Also, I think 20 is definitely too low a squad limit to set, but decreasing the squad size does sound like an attractive possibility.

Yeah, this needs to be reiterated.

The only returning culprit is griffo, and he knows he better shape up.

Otherwise we generally have those with a proven track record, and promising debutants.

As I said before this could make things messy around bye weeks, I don't want to have to be dropping decent players for lesser players JUST to get a full squad in. I was lucky last year, I planned my drafting so that generally in the big bye weeks i would have full, or close to full squads. But in saying this i'm not entirely opposed to a reduction in roster size.

One issue I have is the Kicker Points system, During the Season, Players like Luke Covell, Kurt Gidley and Luke Burt, who without the Kicker points would be starters on a team, were sitting on the bench while teams were struggling to put sides together, However in drafting Todd Carney I was able to pick up an outstanding kicker for only a couple of kicker points.

This is something that I have thought of, and while it is a bit of a "so-so" idea, you can see what I'm trying to say. Instead of having players and their kicker points, have Team Kicker points. For example I could Draft the Roosters Kicking Team and any Penalties, Field goals or Conversions they get go towards their total. For example, Should the Roosters score 19 points in a game (3 Tries, 2 Converstions, 1 Penalty and 1 Field goal), The Roosters Kicking Team would score 7 Points. And maybe A team can only have one Kicking Team at any time, to prevent hoarding. I know it has it's issues but the main thing is, I want an entire player pool to be available to me when drafting or picking up free agents, i don't want to be limited by something as silly as kicker points.

You opinions are well received Monk and i know what your mean. The concept of the kicker points system was flawed last year with (for the most part) players with zero points not being able to be picked as kickers. This has been rectified and ANY player can be named as kicker as long as they are named in your starting 13 for that round.

As for players with kicking points, we have decided to do it this way so you, the coach have to make constant decisions throughout the season about possibly the most important recruit in your team - the kicker.

Do you stick with a kicker who is getting you an average 8 points or do you take a chance, drop him, get another and hope he is jags a few 14 point games - better than your last kicker....

We want you to decide whether it is worth dropping say a Michael Gordon (when he has a bye) for a Gidley (who is playing) and therefore take the chance that another coach doesn't pick up Gordon and does well for the rest of the season.

We also want to stop the hoarding of kickers and if you choose a lesser kicker worth say 7 points, your options of getting lesser (but still good players) kicking point players is increased - like picking up Kenny-Dowall (1), Lawrence (1)or even Luke (3).

Picking a whole kicking team takes a bit of imagination out of the game I believe. We could go talk all day about different ideas for kickers and I am and others are happy to do so - we could even discuss how Virtualnrl ran back in 2002 with full-time and part-time kickers...

How is this for an option re; bye rounds when everyone struggles to field a side.

Each team fields a team with no-one selected, essentially a draw.

Would this work Mig ?

I think each team be allowed one kicker worth 6-10 points and one between 1 - 5, with a maximum of 13 or 14 points.

It could but if you select no players for a round, the auto select will pick your team for you.

Also, look at it this way.

Say I am Team J, and this was my draw. By just non-selecting in the bye weeks, the red teams would be "skipped":

Round 1. Team A
2. B
3. C
4. D
5. E
6. F
7. G
8. H
9. I
10. A
11. B
12. C
13. D
14. E
15. F
16. G
17. H
18. I
19. A
20. B
21. C
22. D

So for example, I would play Team A three times but only play Team H and Team I once.

The problem would be that simply non-selecting just means you skip that week, rather than the competition is put on hold.

To fill the second LU league, maybe PM Jelly Warrior - he is a fantasy footy nut and was very keen last year....

guys, start my new job on the 7th and this will be opening up on the 8th? (or is that the other fanstasy comps ive been reading). Want to start off with a good impression so spending the whole week in front of my cpu on the draft is out lol. Will do me best but if the autopick system actually works this time round it should get knocked off pretty quickly. Will probably be spending some time out on site as well but will give my contact details to somone. Prepared to do whatever it takes again but last years process was f$cking ridiculous

This is a general message to all coaches who are either returning from 2010 or new to NRLCEO in 2011. Registration and competition set up will commence in Mid February. Although, it is currently possible to register and create a competition, ALL competitions and usernames will be deleted in the coming days. ALL coaches will need to re-register when registration opens in February. This is due to new concepts being uploaded to the site in preparation for a great 2011 on the NRLCEO field.
