Nrls Shot Clock Change

How you've managed to arrive at that conclusion is beyond me.

The first two paragraphs clearly state the clock is stopped for 30 seconds after conversion attempts.

They used a poor term "shot clock"

You take a shot a goal

This "shot clock" concept was introduced first with the 9s conversion kicks

But for 80 min games we now have a
- scrum feed clock 30 sec
- drop out clock 45 sec
- kickoff clock 30 sec

But no actual "shot" clock

Yeah I think most sentient people picked up on that a long time ago.

So basically the NRL has introduced TV timeouts after conversions, and painted them up as a benefit to fans.
Watching it tonight, this is indeed what they’ve done. Given it coincides with the new TV deal kicking in proper, this was almost certainly written into the deal so it’s what we’ll have for the next five years. This will sound like choice-supportive bias but I actually much prefer the ad, if there must be one, to fall between the conversion and kickoff rather than between the try and conversion.

The conversion is the natural end of that segment of play and the kickoff the beginning of the next. The ad between try and conversion just took away from the coverage of the atmosphere and celebration of the try. I don’t generally like the idea of TV timeouts but the ad placement just fits much much better for the game IMHO. It helps that the pause is relatively unobtrusive even without the ad too. Fox League just showed another replay.

I agree that between conversion and kick off is the best place for an ad.

What the NRL should do to ensure this new rule doesn't lead to longer game times is enforce an actual shot clock on conversions i.e. the kicker must take his shot before the time runs out of he forfeits the opportunity.

They already stop the clock after I believe 90 seconds so kickers can't waste too much time. I think that would be a reasonable shot clock time.

The only exception would be if a try is scored with less than 90 seconds to go in the game. In that case the kicker will have unlimited time to take the shot (making sure kicks to win after the siren aren't rushed for maximum drama)
