NSW Clubs forced out of QLD Cup

Firstly, why? Secondly, what is wrong with the Qld Cup at the moment apart from our own administrators? Leave the Qld Cup alone. It's fine as it is. If you want to f**k around with competitions, stuff around with the NSW competitions.

No need to change the Qld Cup

But NRL level clubs need to field a team in a National Reserve Grade.

As 11 teams are based in NSW this has a bigger impact in the NSW Cup

There was a attempt to make the NSW Cup look like the Qld Cup but it wont work in its current format. It can't be a glorifed Metro Cup - it needs to be a true State Cup and needs to follow the same path as Qld Cup did when it started and have Regional teams represented.

So if you're not doing anything to the Qld Cup, how is the NSW Cup different to a national reserve grade? Most of the NRL clubs do have a reserve grade team in the NSW Cup already. The others, like the Broncos, have other squad members in respective Qld Cup teams. SO, all the clubs have their excess players at a lower level so whats a national reserve grade(involving only NSW under your plan if the Qld Cup is not being changed) any different to what we have already?

I still can't believe the short-sightedness from the NSWRL which banned Canberra from partnering with Souths-Logan and Manly with the Sunny Coast. So glad those days are behind us...

Raiders to renew Souths-Logan link
November 8, 2013
Jon Tuxworth
Sports reporter at The Canberra Times

The Canberra Raiders are set to revive their affiliation with the Queensland Cup, confident it will help them address issues of homesickness among their promising juniors and give them more power in the south-Brisbane turf war with the Broncos.

Two years after being ordered by the NSW Rugby League to cut their affiliation with Souths Logan Magpies, the Raiders are confident a meeting of the Australian Rugby League Commission next week will clear the path for them to restore a formal feeder system with them again. It would enable the Raiders to send their developing players on the fringe of the NRL to either Souths Logan in the Queensland Cup, or Mounties in the NSW Rugby League competition.

It could prove to be a major boost for the Raiders in the south Brisbane region, regarded as one of rugby league's richest junior talent pools.

The Raiders have recruited a host of NRL stars from the area, including Anthony Milford, Josh Papalii and Edrick Lee, who have all suffered homesickness as they adapted to new lives in Canberra.

Milford is still threatening to follow through with a requested release to return to Brisbane after the World Cup.

The bonus of a formal feeder relationship with Souths Logan is that the Raiders best junior talent from Queensland could still play more often in Queensland during their development.

The Raiders were prevented from sending contracted players to Souths Logan in mid-2011 by the NSW Rugby League, which also threatened to ban them from competing in the under-16 and under-18 junior competitions.

A change of NSWRL management has since helped put it back on the agenda and NRL chief operating officer Jim Doyle has completed a review into the issue. Other Raiders juniors from the Souths Logan nursery include Luke Bateman, Patrick Mago and Brenko Lee.

''It helps with the homesickness factor with these kids,'' Souths Logan chief executive Jim McClelland said. ''It's good for those kids that are Souths kids if they're not required in the top 18 [NRL] they can fly home, see mum and dad and play in the jersey they started with.

''We've given the Raiders a lot of quality players and we want that process to continue, but it's very difficult if they're devoting resources and not getting anything out of it.

''We're fighting against other codes, it's a waste of time fighting against ourselves.''

Raiders development boss David Hamilton said players could be shared among Mounties and Souths Logan, depending on the origin of the players.

''We'll send local players to Mounties and the Queensland boys can go up there [to Brisbane].

''It's just common sense and solves a lot of problems.''

The Raiders are in a fight with the Broncos over the recruiting territory in south Brisbane. The Broncos are establishing a $6.5-million junior academy in Logan and poached Raiders scout Brian Edwards.

McClelland said two of the biggest rugby league schools in Queensland, Marsden High and Redbank Plains, had guaranteed a commitment to the Raiders. ''These other NRL clubs certainly don't do what the Raiders do for junior football here,'' McClelland said.

Manly did have a team. Not sure about now.

Also good to see Milford has a team he can play for next year. No need to sign with the Broncos, he can finish his current deal in the Qld Cup

Good news. Would like to See Manly re-unite with the Sunshine Coast, it was a massive positive for the club at the time. I understand the NSWRL don't want to promote development of talented Queenslanders but this is a good thing for Australian rugby league and the NRL.

I like the change but would want one proviso...

Any player sent to the interstate purely because of a feeder club arrangement with their contracted NRL club remains a eligible only for the state that their actual contract club is based in come state of origin time.

This move will strengthen the QRL more and re-enforce it as the premier 2nd tier comp.

What's the reason for the Raiders not having a NSW Cup team and preferring to link with Souths-Logan?

I think there has to be a middle ground on this - certainly allow clubs to have interstate feeders if that's where they want... but also that they must maintain a local feeder as well. Good to hear they'll maintain the Mounties relationship.

None at the moment - they were all canned in 2012. At that time, Souths Logan/Raiders and Sunshine Coast/Manly were the two interstate affiliations I was aware of.

They have a NSW Cup club in Mounties and according to the article will be looking to maintain this.

I don't think it'll matter with the changes to the Origin eligibility rules.

Essentially this would be a "Greg Inglis" Rule, which unless you are playing State Cup under the age of 12, I can't see how this rule would be required.

This is great news, hopefully Manly follow suit and hook back up with the SC

Both SL and the SC QRL clubs have suffered since the NSWRL shut down the NRL club affiliations.

Part of the restructure of NSW & QLD cups should be to establish permanent feeder relationships between the NRL clubs and 2-3 second tier teams so that every NSW/QLD cup club is a feeder club.

It is clear the clubs that have struggled in Q Cup have been those without NRL Affiliations - Souths Logan Magpies, Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles and Central Capras.

Central Capras have linked with Brisbane, looks like Souths Logan Magpies are reuniting with Canberra...lets hope the Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles link with an NRL club.
