Laurie Daley has ruled out having a another half or utility play the hooker position.
"NSW coach Laurie Daley has emphatically brushed any temptation to select a makeshift dummy half for this year’s State of Origin series.
There have been increasing calls for Daley to snub specialist hookers Robbie Farah and Peter Wallace and opt for a halfback or five-eighth such as Mitchell Pearce, Josh Reynolds, Adam Reynolds and Jack Bird.
Daley however won’t be considering a temporary dummy-half, saying Farah and Penrith’s Peter Wallace are the favourites.
Farah has been solid this year, as has Wallace. The Blues don’t have enormous depth in the hooking position, prompting speculation Daley may look left-field. But it won’t happen.
“No, that would be too difficult,” Daley said on The Loz and Dog Show. “As it stands at this stage, my thoughts would be to pick a specialist hooker.
“It’s been speculated and it has been done in the past, but it’s not the way I would go.
“If all the specialist hookers fell over, you might go down that path but, at this stage, it would be about picking a true No.9. There would be too much pressure choosing a halfback there, it would be hard for players who haven’t done it, especially in that arena.
“I would rather pick them as a halfback and let them play in that position, rather than give them that extra responsibility. That isn’t to say we mightn’t pick a seven and give him a 10-15 minute spell in dummy half. That wouldn’t be out of the question but to actually start, no, not something I would look at doing.”
Daley has always shown faith in Farah, who remains just ahead of his rivals for selection."
