I think I read somewhere that the 18's game will be between a NSW team selected from the SG Ball comp and the QLD team will be chosen from the teams that contest the new 18's comp up there. Anyone know if that's correct ?

I know Qld are picking 2 B TEAMS for 16 & 18's. They are calling them 16 Maroons &18 Maroons. The Qld Teams will exclude those boys who make the the Qld 16's & Qld Origin U18 sides which play NSW before Origin nos 1 & 2. I not sure who they playing. Last year they played agianst NSW Country.

I will try to find out more about this year and post back.

At this stage I can only confirm that Qld has made coaching and manager appointments for these "B" (Maroon) teams. I couldn't find out who they were playing against. I will dig further when training resumes next week.

Interesting poser for you. Which State do the Gold Coast Titans Harold Mats & SG Ball players qualify for ? - Remember a number of these boys come from the Northern Rivers of NSW and play club footy for NSW clubs and obviously some do not. I wonder if the authorities have thought of this.

Have Vandermade, McGaughey, and Lafaele moved back from the Academy squad?

Yes, they are in the Parramatta summer squad of around 40. However the squad will be reduced to 22 after the 31 January trial vs Illawarra at Albion Park.

Will those players you mentioned be picked? Hmmm, they are training well and competition for this side is tough. I think they will but Gawks is up against 3 NZ props. Not sure what this sort of message sends to the locals.

Regarding under 17's I would include the following players for consideration:

Props: Solo Alone (Penrith), Jon Teafu (Penrith) and Adrian Haangana (Norths)

Hooker: Nick Folino (Parramatta) Should have been starting hooker for NSW 16's this year. Fittest bloke in Parra's SG Ball and is set for a big year.

Second Row: Jacob Loco (Parramatta). No one has heard of this bloke but they will next season. Mark his name down. This boy is a future champion.

I would have to agree with you regarding Jacob Loko, he is an exciting prospect. He played in the centres for his club a few times and killed them in that position as well. Hopefully the off season has given him time to get over niggling injuries.

Vandermade and McGaughey were two of the better players in the HM's win in 2007. Disappointing for them if they miss out again.

I think 2nd row is a better position for him. He has a high work rate (dare I say like .......Hindmarsh) but is devastating with the ball and can crack the line. He is a wonderfully built athlete with a great engine.

Regarding his injuries - he has been in rehab once but I'm pretty sure he is ok now.

I think they will make it. But Gawks was sent to the academy supposedly to get Ball experience and ready him for 2009. He has done his time and trained hard then the club advises they have signed 3 NZ props. Bit disheartening for the local props. Maybe they will play him 2nd row.

Do you think the Western Acadamy is working well for the Eels?

I don't think any players from their Harold Matthews sides have come into Parramatta or Penrith SG Ball.

I don't think any of Parramatta's NYC team came from Western Acadamy SG Ball. Although Pat Mataele is now in their training squad for 2009 season - it'll be interesting to see if he makes it.

Daniel Mahoney went to Balmain and Blake Williams was coming to Norths but then was poached by Balmain as well. It looks like players sent to the Acadamy may be better off finding another club to try to progress their career.

McGaughey and Lafaele might struggle for a place because i'm sure they intend to play their 3 NZ imports. Also they might pick Ahafono over Vandermade in the backs, Ulugia is almost certain to be fullback.

At the information night for the Eels SG Ball they said that a number of their players in NRL and Toyota Cup had at one stage come through the Academy and the development squad systems.

I got the impresion they place a good deal of importance to these two systems.

It looks like Penrith use the academy to blood their younger guys for the following year. If I'm not mistaken the majority of the players they have sent to the academy this year are under 17 players. I think Parramatta will do the same this year with next year in mind.

I understand Mahoney left because Parramatta didn't renew his contract. This decision was made by Grant Jones who has since been appointed as the Wests Tigers Toyota Cup head coach. You have to wonder then what Mahoney's career path will be like at the Tigers.

I don't think this is right, Western Sydney Academy has only been in the Junior Reps comps for 2 years and so far none of them have played for Parramatta NRL or NYC.

I went along to Norths NSW Cup training last night (Tuesday) and the Bears Harold Matthews (Under-16s) started training after the NSW Cup.

I was very impressed to see former Bears Junior Rep players Mitchell Pearce and Kieran Foran were there running the training session. NSW Cup coach Wayne Lambkin was also helping to run the training session. This is a great idea by coach Kevin Nicholls to get these guys involved.

I think it's fantastic that Mitchell Pearce, being the current NSW State of Origin halfback, is willing to comeback and help these up and coming players improve their game, and likewise for Kieran Foran, who is training with the Manly Nrl squad and is a pretty good chance to play Nrl this year or next.

Mitchell and Kieran are both North Sydney local juniors who started their careers in the Bears Junior Rep squads.

Here is a photo of Kieran and Mitchell (facing the camera):

Hey everyone,
Just wondering if there is any Jnr reps trial infomation out there at the moment. I know that Souths trial Wests this week, HM on Tuesday at Hillier Oval Liverpool and SGB on Thursday at Erko. Don't know times though. There should be quite a few trials in the next few weeks I would think.
Thanks guys.

I agree Rambo1. I know trials mean very little and are not always good indicaters on teams real strength, but I still find them interesting.
Does any one know or have an opinion on the Newcastle / Manly trial?
Thanks AB.
