As if we'd make a smart move like this ...

THE New Zealand Rugby League last night left the door ajar for former Australian coach Wayne Bennett to join the Kiwis' 2008 World Cup tilt.

Publicly, the NZRL continues to support present mentor Gary Kemble. However, while stopping short of railroading its embattled coach, it has "strongly encouraged" him to seek Bennett's services in the lead-up to next year's World Cup. The NZRL believes Bennett, who coached the All Golds against the Northern Union last month, has developed strong bonds with the Kiwi players and would prove a trump card for Kemble.

Recruitment of Bennett for NZ's World Cup campaign would win overwhelming support by the Kiwi public, according to NZRL director of coaching Graham Lowe. "We've managed to develop a good relationship with Wayne and I don't want to go any further than that until I speak to Gary," Lowe said. "But if I were Gary, I'd be asking Wayne's advice. All options will be put on the table. I'm sure Wayne will have formed a good bond and relationship with the All Golds."

"I know what I'd do if I were Gary – I'd be on the phone to Wayne straight away, but it's not up to me. Wayne's got plenty on his plate without worrying about what's going on here but I'd think what's being cultured is a good relationship, and that is important."

The NZRL continues to back Kemble in his tenure through to the end of the World Cup, but this standpoint is growing increasingly weak. Kemble, with no top-flight coaching experience, has unquestionably been shown to be out of his depth on the international stage.

I do have a problem with that article that is popping up all over the show.

There is a major difference between "leaving the door ajar" and "chasing".

Even allowing for a little journalistic licence, it's a bit much.

Can't disagree with encouraging Benny Boy though. We DON"T have the talent
in this country anymore, so we need to go off shore.

Simple really !!!

Would be a big fan of Wayne coaching that side with Kearney and/or Nikau in their for experience and to add a bit of mana.

Suprising really when you look through some of the NRL profiles of some of these young kiwis coming through the grades and so many of them list Kearney as their boyhood hero.

And the plot thickens, NZRL are a joke...how can they come out and say they fully back Kemble then in the background start pushing for Bennett, who might i add does not live on the shores of New Zealand! Then say "ohhhh Gary should phone him up..."
Why would Gary phone him up, he wont want to lose his job! NZRL need to grow some Balls and a brain.

Who's running this show?

if they are gonna do it, do it right! make it as clean as possible!

Lowie is becoming a dickhead. He's all about his own f*cken ego. He f*cked up firstly by appointing the coach, now he wants to ditch him. What's Lowie done so far? Jacksh*t. He'd be the first I'd get rid of.

Rubbish

He is suggesting Kemble use Bennett as a mentor and use him as a sounding board and for advice. He is not saying i want Bennett to coach the side.

The current Aussie coach used Gould in this role when he began in the NRL, and now Fittler is doing the same. To suggest it is a smart move i would have thought.

Lol, I don't have a problem with Bennet as such, and I respect Lowie for his past coaching career and passion for the game.
I find it amusing Lowie however is forever snapping at interviewers for the old Kiwi coaching line 'watch out for Lowie, he's never been able to let it go.'
Firstly, his opinion columns for years have wanted coaches sacked for much much less than what's happened currently, including Cleary last year, when he wanted the coach and half the team gone...so why suddenly the turnaround?!
BUT- I love the fact he argues he can let it go, yet in every single interview this year I've heard, "Garys the coach, but what I'd do is this..." , or, "It's the coaches decision, I'm not the coach, but if I was I'd be..."
May be nothing in it, might be just the passion of the guy. But it just makes me Lol when I hear it.

I wouldn't want someone to tell me how to wipe my a*se. Kemble is becoming a puppet. I have no problems with Bennett, but being dictated to in the media is weak. What's wrong with a phone call?

Well, at some point, the fact is someone did tell you how to wipe your arse, and new coaches on the block normally have someone around to bounce ideas off to.

How do you know this hasn't been discussed between the pair as well, it says they have "strongly encouraged" him, although i don't always back the media to tell the truth

thats the feeling i get too.

I would strongly suggest that is why he was selected in the first place - and partially why
Bluey is no longer there.

Nikau was a great club player - not international. His coaching record to my knowledge is not that hot i.e - AVERAGE BC team plus NZ A and probably not as good as Kemble's record.

Ive had alot of respect for Lowe over the years but he's just not thinking through what he says to the media anymore.

He actually reminds me of Mr Burns from the Simpsoms when he looks straight at Homer and say's "We are leaving get in the plane",

Homer looks back and say's "But sir its not a real plane - its a toy plane". Mr Burns looks back real serious and pulls out a gun locks it and aims at him " I said get in the plane !"

Bingo. Could not agree more and felt that from the time he was selected. What exactly were the reasons for selecting him above other potential coaches, who really did look more the goods. No disrespect to Kemble, I like the guy and all he did was go for a job and got it. Can't help but feel he got the job over others more to his character to toe the party line than his superior coaching skills to the rest of the pack.
