I just think Astle is more reliable that's all.

McMillan has maintained a superior average throughout his career (now up to 50 tests). Infact his test record is one of our best ever, second only to Richardson in the current set-up. I certainly wouldn't call Astle reliable, he is probably the biggest hit and miss man in the team. Our best century maker but also very good at getting out for single figures.
Well, maybe reliable was the wrong word. Playing like less of a plonker (unnecessary reverse sweeps and the like) is what I was trying to get at.

Richardson has averaged up to or around 50 for the last few seasons and Papps is there on the back of his prolific run scoring in the 2003/4 domestic season.

If that is not earning their spots as openers in the Test side I don't know what is.
yes but they both had very low averages against SA cant remember exat averages but the were aronud the 20 that is not good enough

Richo looked out of touch, but still had a couple of good partnerships just rotating the strike. Papps I thought got a few absolute Barry Crocker umpiring decisions - some of the worst I've ever seen in actual fact. I find it hard to judge him on that.

JtR, I know what you mean. I think with McMillan V Astle, a lot of people tend to judge them on their personalities. Astle comes across as a quiet guy who is always giving his best for his country, McMillan comes across as a bit arrogant, and not always playing to the best of his ability. But that's not necessarily what the scores on the board say.

Mills is a good selection - suits the conditions down to the ground. I dont' believe Skippy would. Mills is a swing bowler, we all know how gloomy England is. Sinclair is a hand/eye player, not a foot mover, he may struggle on big time moving decks for mine.

It could be potentially NZ's best squad, except our spinner needs to start playing like an international bowler rather than a club 4th grade tweaker that he is currently.

Actually chance's are that pitch's will be flat and suit batting. England have no started doing this.

Mills averages over 40 with the bat in FC cricket.

With the amount of depth we have in our batting, if we are getting down to relying on Mills for that, then we are going to be in huge poop anyway

yea even bring back Priest

thats pushing it a bit

the selectors must see something in mills, he is certainly an excitement machine if he bowls the last over.

i would have put another batsman (sinclair) in his place.

but i,m not picking the team.

I reckon the only time Mills would be an excitement machine would be if you were padded up and facing

Astle also doubles up as a handy change bowler.
And who got the crutial wicket of Kallis in Auckland? Macca.

There are about 3 warm up matches for the selectors to sort out combinations anyhow. Besides, Astle may not even go. He has been named in the squad but he still hasn't passed a fitness test. He has another late april but if he doesn't pass that Matty gets a ticket to England.

I would very much doubt whether Astle will be bowling again.

I personally wouldnt of taken Astle and Bond. I would of left them at home to be 120% fit, instead of 75% fit and may not play at the Test. So effectively you have 12 fit players which is not a good idea if you are building those two up for the ODIs.
