I can't see how the NRL could refuse to register a contract for Foran, unless his release contained some kind of non-compete clause.

There was a media release about 1 week or 2 back, they said he would have to demonstrate that he is over his depression and mental issues.

What about dropping from a $1.2M contract to $600k contract in 12 months. The NRL have previously refused to register contracts for Ferguson etc when they were presented with such shenanigans.

They were happy to register him with us at 800k (before we were found to be cheating TPA's). After a season involving injury, mental health issues, drug abuse and a suicide attempt I reckon any club would be able to argue his value has dropped a fair bit.

As above, When we signed him, he was on top of his game, now, whilst undoubtedly a talent, he's a known risk.

Ask yourself if we were to sign him now, what price would you think worth the risk? t wouldn't be any where near 1.2 million.

Was not Ferguson a risk as well ? His registration was held back because he was a yobbo alcoholic. His contract value to many clubs was low because of his recurring stupidity. Yet the NRL arm wrestled with the Roosters over his deemed value.

Not the same ?

It's not necessarily the same because we don't know the values involved. The Chooks probably tried to get him for minimum salary + match payments (free under the cap due to games played the previous year). That's more significant unders than a reported $600k for Foran after we initially signed him for a reported $800k on the cap.

Yeah, much the same, though Ferguson is a different kind of risk, you could well write f**kwit clauses into his contract, and as Poo said, we don't know the figures involved.

Talk today in the Media saying Foran is close to signing with Warriors. If true makes a mockery of his so called depression, not to mention the gambling issues, wanting to be close to the kids, etc.

Foran signs with Warriors
By The Mole
September 12, 2016

TROUBLED halfback Kieran Foran is set to sign a deal to play with the New Zealand Warriors within the next 24 hours.

Foran has agreed to a one year deal, with the Warriors hoping to extend his stay at the club if he succeeds.

The Warriors have beaten several clubs – most notably Canterbury – to sign the Kiwi Test star.

Foran sensationally walked out on a rich contract with Parramatta midway through this season after his life began to unravel.

The breakdown of the relationship with his partner and mother of his children, his questionable friendship with gambling identity Eddie Hayson and issues with depression saw Foran quit the game.

The NRL will have to ratify his return to football but the Warriors have an ace up their sleeve in chief executive Jim Doyle.

Doyle was a key figure in the formation of the NRL integrity unit and will know exactly how to convince the NRL that the controversial halfback is ready to return to football.

Foran’s combination with Shaun Johnson will give he Warriors arguably the best halves pairing in the game next season.

As Pou suggested in the other thread I hope this means Lolohea is on the market. He is a gun. Reminds me of RTS. A bird in the hand I reckon. We are no certainties of bagging the other halves that are coming on the market. Most will stay at their clubs. Would love to have Moses but I reckon he will stay at the Tigers. If we miss out on Lolohea, Jack Bird is the only one I would aggressively chase. Maybe even Chad Townsend seeing that he was hooked last week during the game. I reckon the Sharks will need to choose between these two in 2017/2018. Bird is wasted at centre.

Agree that this might start a domino effect. Assume Robbie will sign this week as well.

Foran's only one year contract though... would Warriors release anyone until they were sure that Foran was back to his best on-field? Maybe by around 30 June next year we might be able to snatch their excess halfback, hopefully with Warriors paying some freight?

Lolohea I suspect would be on a lower end salary. Hasn't really established himself and we would be paying about $300k for his undoubted potential. Sounds plenty but is bugger all for a half. I hear Townsend is on $400k.

If you read he article, he has not signed for anyone yet and I am not sure if the NRL will register his contract as yet due to his recent issues.

And on top of that it was written by the mole.

I really dont care where he plays assuming he does play but I think he is a long way from signing anything and I wouldn't hold my breath for any domino effect

KIERAN Foran’s return to rugby league is far from certain, despite being close to signing a one-year deal with the New Zealand Warriors.

The Daily Telegraph can confirm Foran must front the NRL Integrity Unit to answer a range of questions before officially making a comeback.

It’s understood the Integrity Unit want to quiz the ex-Parramatta five-eighth on his relationship with controversial punter Eddie Hayson.

This includes an explanation on Foran’s usage of his personal TAB account and allegations linking him with match fixing, which is currently part of an ongoing Crime Commission investigation.

The NRL want to make sure the New Zealand international isn’t implicated in this investigation before they even consider giving him the green light to return.

On top of dealing with Foran’s links to gambling, the NRL will also gauge his mental state before registering any contract.

It’s understood the playmaker must prove he is mentally ready to handle the expectations required to be a professional rugby league player.

This comes as the NRL confirmed Foran needs approval from the Integrity Unit for any deal with the Warriors to become valid.

“Kieran is not a registered player with the NRL, so the NRL would have to be convinced that he is fit and proper to be a registered player,” an NRL spokesman said.

The Warriors on Monday denied reports Foran was set to sign a deal in the next 24 hours.

Managing Director Jim Doyle said no contract had been tabled to the NRL as the club continues to work through discussions with the 26-year-old.

“We haven’t lodged a contract with the NRL at this point in time; we’ve not got any contract with Kieran at this point in time,” said Doyle.

Despite this, it’s understood the Warriors are closing in on securing Foran’s signature.

The former premiership-winning Sea Eagle has already met with Doyle and toured the club’s facilities at Mt Smart Stadium two weeks ago.

Doyle has also provided personal support for Foran as he deals with a host of issues that forced him to walk away from the game and his multi-million dollar deal with Parramatta in July.

Told yas.

NRL: Warriors' bid to sign Kieran Foran could be blocked by 'Israel Folau' rule

The NRL's 'Israel Folau' rule could prevent the Warriors from signing troubled Kiwis international Kieran Foran.

The Warriors are believed to be close to securing the former Manly and Parramatta playmaker on a one-year deal for next season but the possibility of the NRL enforcing a notional value rule could see the Auckland-based outfit struggle to fit him beneath the salary cap.

The same rule famously prevented Parramatta from securing the signature of former Kangaroo and Queensland State of Origin star and current Wallaby wing Israel Folau when he considered a return to league in 2013.

Folau was priced out of the Eels range as the NRL attempted to thwart potential cap loopholes with heavily back-ended contracts and numerous third-party deals.

The Warriors prospects of signing Foran hinge largely on the fact he is reportedly willing to sign on for much less than the multi-million dollar contract that he was on at Parramatta prior to being granted a release on compassionate grounds in July.

Warriors managing director Jim Doyle is confident of the Warriors chances of snaring the 26-year-old five-eighth but said they would not be able to afford him if the NRL classed his value in the vicinity of $1 million per season.

"If that's the case then he won't be here at the Warriors," said Doyle.

"We've got no contract at this point in time with Kieran. That's still a work in progress. We continue to talk to him on a regular basis.

"I would say I'm confident but, as I say to some people, if I would say we were the favourites but the favourite doesn't always win."

The situation is clouded by the fact the NRL will not confirm a minimum amount that Foran should be paid. The Warriors and Foran need to come to an agreement regarding a contract offer and the club will then need to submit that deal for the NRL to approve.

"They won't actually say 'we'll only register him at this figure' because they say 'we don't even need to contemplate that until such time as a contract is registered'.

"First and foremost you have to have two willing parties to agree to a certain number and then obviously they'll assess that from there.

"You'll make an agreement with a player for a certain amount of money and then you'll lodge that contract and the NRL will decide whether to register it or not."

Newly appointed Warriors coach Stephen Kearney has had a long association with Foran since handing him his New Zealand test debut back in 2009.

Kearney was not overly keen to discuss the prospect of Foran joining the Warriors but said the club could help him work through various personal struggles as he prepares to make a playing return.

"He's still got a fair bit to work through and hopefully he becomes a part of the club and we can help him through that process," said Kearney.

Doyle acknowledged Foran also has to answer to the NRL's integrity unit and answer questions over his association with controversial betting identity Eddie Hayson and and allegations linking him with match fixing before a new contract is approved.

The game's governing body also want assurances that he has taken steps to improve his mental wellbeing and is in a fit state to embark on a return to the game.

While Foran's reputation is under a cloud, Doyle said it was unfair to assume he was guilty of any wrong-doing.

"I read something in the paper about Jarryd Hayne and it is just a cloud, so you can't pre-judge anyone," he said.

"We'll have to spend a bit of time with him working through a process.

"They've made that clear obviously so that will just be a part of the process.

"So from our point of view if we think he's got the right values, the right attributes as a person, and we think he's in the right condition, then he's someone that we would potentially go after."

When asked if Kearney's appointment would help to deliver Foran to Mt Smart Stadium, Doyle replied: "You'd have to ask Kieran."
