When I was growing up in Parramatta (we moved there in 1960, when I was five-years old), it really was a 'westie' town. I lived on James Ruse Drive (which was then called Rydalmere Avenue.) The section between Victoria Road and Kissing Point Road was just a narrow dirt road - now it`s a six-lane highway.
There was little multi-culturalism; a few Greeks and Italians and British, and the rest were white Australians.
I still remember Cumberland Oval and Dundas Drive-In and Murray Brothers and Waltons and David Jones. I remember when the Roxy Cinema only had one screen. I remember some sort of migrant hostel half-way up Bettington Road that housed pommie migrants in buildings with semi-circular corrugated iron roofs. I remember lots of things. The place has changed a hell of a lot - but I still love Parramatta. Every time I go there it`s just layers of memories.

yes it was the Astra. it was also not A 'Westi Town'. It was like a large country town when most people new each other. I loved Parra then and can not help to still love it now despite all it's faults. I grew up down the road from old Cumberland and my mum who just died still lived in the same house. We we win the old club song still brings tears to my eyes.

ah yes - The Greater Union cinema - good cinema but there was no-where to park !!

At the Roxy, you always hoped your movie was in the BIG theatre.

and the Village - how poky and crowded was the foyer always. You couldn't move.

I remember when Westfields didnt reach all the way to Argyle St on the cnr of Church St and you had the Westfield Tavern (bottlo upstairs, tavern underground), outside steps to Macca's and Johnny Peards sports store downstairs from the entrance. And you used to be able to queue up overnight outside Grace Bros Argyle St entrance to get GF tickets.

And Lucy the bag lady who lived around the station for about 15 years.
