Mate the kid is great at the short stuff, but he needs to prove himself in the real stuff..

Warner had scored Shield tons,& tons for Australia A,in the lead up to his selection..

I like Finch, but until he can perform in the long form of the game he shouldn't be on the selection radar..

Fair enough mate. Ideally it would be good to have a 2 month period straight after the sydney test where shield games are the most important and only competition running around and have all the test players playing. If all the bowlers around Australia were bowling at the present time given the depth we have, the next generation of batsman will have a true international feel at Shield level. This in my opinion is why we don't have any standout batsman coming through demanding to be picked.

The shitty part about all this is that Finch will be playing the short stuff for Australia,& not playing Shield cricket..

Our selectors make some out their decisions though,so if he kills it in the short stuff he'll probably come onto the radar..

Yeh for sure mate. Money dictates they have to play 20/20 i suppose. It's not really my cup of tea but at least it gives some younger blokes the chance to rub shoulders with Chris Gayle and Murali and so on.

What's your opinion of Cowan Horrie? Im not that big of a fan to be honest.

Not a fan..

He's a smart guy & i reckon he over thinks the game..Nerves get the better of him when he's batting..

He doesn't have the range of strokes needed to dominate the best attacks around the world..

He is a fighter, but his way of fighting seems to be to got on the defence..then he starts to forget he has to rotate the strike..Which then leads to ridiculous run outs..Especially if he is batting with a selfish player & even worse runner like Hughes..

He's an Invers favourite though,so i'd say he is safe for now..

Be interesting to see if he'd be so safe if he had a run of poor scores in the Shield games before they go to India..

I agree with that. I think he puts a bit of pressure on the blokes up the other end because of his slow scoring rate.

I thought he was very ordinary against the spinner Herath in the test. If that was any indication i think he will struggle big time on the dustbowls in India. Against the Poms in the recent series the ball was turning from day one.

Okay so what is the betting on how long it will take Harris to break down again??..

Aussie fast bowler Ryan Harris hits comeback trail from shoulder surgery in low-key Twenty20 clash..

AAP January 09, 2013 9:42AM

Former Australia Test fast bowler Ryan Harris will ramp up his comeback from shoulder surgery when he leads a Queensland Invitational XI against Australian Country XI in a Twenty20 clash in Bundaberg on Saturday.

Brisbane Heat signing Harris was forced to pull out of the KFC T20 Big Bash League in a bid to fast-track his recovery but said he was back to bowling at full pace in the nets five months after going under the knife.

Harris will captain-coach the Queensland outfit that will also feature Brisbane Heat wicketkeeper-batsman Andrew Robinson and ex-Bulls cricketer Lee Carseldine.

"I've been pretty happy how things have been going along while training with the Heat so this game against the Country boys will give me another chance to bowl competitively,'' Harris said.

"Hopefully I can use this game and the (Brisbane) club matches for Toombul to get my workload up ahead of the one day and Shield games for Queensland after the BBL finishes.''

Harris has taken 47 wickets in 12 Tests at 23.63 for Australia.

Most of us love to have a dig at Watto, but i'd do the same in his position..

I also think he should have to force his way back in if he isn't bowling..We won without him last time..

Oh baby, Watson to put family before country..

Date January 9, 2013 - 4:12PM

SHANE WATSON is expected to put family before country and could miss a Test match during the tour of India to fly home for the birth of his first child, creating another dilemma for national selectors.

And Ben Hilfenhaus appears to be losing his race against the clock to earn selection for the four-Test series.

Watson and his wife Lee Furlong are expecting the arrival of their first child in March, raising the potential for a clash with Australia's Test schedule in India.

he vice-captain, a likely inclusion if fit to tour the subcontinent, may sit out the third or fourth Test, although he could also play both games if his wife gives birth between matches.

Ricky Ponting missed the second Test on a tour of Sri Lanka in 2011 so he could be present for the birth of his and wife Rianna's second child.

Watson's potential unavailability for parts of the tour is another factor selectors must take into account as they plan for life after Michael Hussey, whose retirement has left a huge hole in Australia's batting line-up.

Selectors had already been scratching their heads over how to replace the experienced and dependable Hussey and where Watson slotted best in the batting order now he was not bowling.

Watson was moved from first drop to No.4 in his two Tests against Sri Lanka as it was felt the position would better accommodate his bowling.

But, now that he is taking an indefinite break from bowling, Australian team management is considering restoring Watson as an opener, where he averages nearly 44 from 24 matches as opposed to Ed Cowan's 33 from 13 games.

Such a move would break up Cowan's partnership with David Warner, which was last year's most prolific opening pair in world cricket, and possibly endanger the adopted Tasmanian's position in the XI.

Watson had stated prior to his move from opener in late 2011 that his preferred position was at the top of the order.

Used primarily as partnership breaker towards the end of Ponting's reign as captain, Watson was able to stay injury free for two years after earning an international recall in the 2009 Ashes series.

But he has struggled to cope with the extra bowling workload placed on him by Michael Clarke in the past 18 months.

Although chairman of selectors John Inverarity's panel is now judging Watson as a specialist batsman rather than as a bowler, the selectors are keen for him to resume bowling.

Watson, who has taken 48 wickets at 28 since his return in 2009, will not bowl in the next two months but the door remains ajar for him to play a role with the ball in the Ashes later this year, although it's unlikely he will bowl extensively as he has this summer.

The 31-year-old is aiming to return for the ODI series against West Indies, starting February 1, but he could also make a comeback via the Sheffield Shield.

here's a thought, don't take him to India and let him be there for missus and baby during tour time. He can try to force his way to England

Sunshine only bowled a lot when we persisted with out of form johnson for a while. Hilfy being inconsistant didnt help, Siddle has only become consistant over the last 12-18 months. Here is your real problem. Now with the likes of Pattinson, Bird, Siddle, Starc, Harris all fit and raring to go, Sunshine can focus on his batting like he did before.

Im prepared to give the bloke Indian series however many tests he can play there, and a couple of ashes tests, all soley as a batsman. Consistant failure in these then chopping block

Big wraps for Scissorhands from Heals..

Australia Test wicketkeeper Matthew Wade's mistakes costing team, former gloveman Ian Healy says..

By Mark Hayes Herald Sun January 12, 2013 8:35AM

Ian Healy has savaged Matthew Wade's wicketkeeping as inappropriate for the Test team.

The former Test vice-captain lashed the Victorian gloveman's basics as unacceptable, overriding his 42.5 average and two centuries in his first nine matches since taking over from Brad Haddin in the Caribbean in April.

Healy told radio RSN's Breakfast program that Wade's several missed stumping opportunities and tough dropped catches when standing up to the stumps added pressure to others trying to make their way in international cricket.

"Even some of the basic stuff that he's not tidying up - he's not getting to the stumps, he's not taking returns well (and) he's not sharpening up the fielding effort," Healy said.

"So even those basic disciplines weren't being created, let alone missed dismissals. I'm pretty sure Nathan Lyon wouldn't have been that happy - there were four or five chances missed from his bowling and he's getting criticised for not taking wickets. So these are all the little internal conflicts of an under-achieving wicketkeeper."

Healy said Australia selectors should consider taking Haddin as a second keeper on the Ashes tour.

"They haven't (taken a back-up) for a while, but they might do that again," he said. "I think Matthew could do with a practice partner and he could do with someone breathing down his neck to make sure he gets all those things done."

Healy said the unrivalled batting of his successor Adam Gilchrist had changed expectations of the national keeper to being an elite batsman.

But he said Gilchrist had a luxury Wade wasn't afforded - total "relevance to his team".

"He was appropriate for the team they had (at the time)," Healy said. "He had a team with a great bowling attack that created more chances than you needed.

"Now we haven't got an attack like that, we've got an attack that if you need 20 wickets in a Test, they might create 18 and you'd better take a half-chance here or there, or a great run-out, and you might get over the line.

"That's where you don't need a wicketkeeper missing stuff.

"And right now, the Australian cricket team in its Test form, needs the best wicketkeeper and we've got to find out who that is - someone who's not making mistakes."

Healy said he was unsure why Haddin, who was keeper in Friday's one-day international, had not been reinstated to the Test role.

He also downplayed Tasmanian Tim Paine's chances as an alternative with Healy preferring Chris Hartley as the country's top wicketkeeper.

Lol wouldn't surprise me that Healy thinks Gilly was crap. Some of his stuff is rubbish but he's right about Wade.
