Geez it shits me that what Poups linked is considered as acceptable coverage for the second tier competition of the NRL.

The NRL rejecting my query in regards amateur video coverage of these games wouldn't bother me anywhere near as much if even the meagre highlights packages that are produced had more then 5min put into them.

And don't get me started on the sound issues...

Haha. I thought if you when I watched it mate.

Did the NRL reply to your NYC coverage query then?

I'm not sure where the mods stand with this but this is my query and the official reply I received from the NRL.

Good Morning,

I am seeking clarification regarding the NRL's stance on non-monetised video coverage of non-televised NYC and NSW Cup games (or fan footage in plainer terms).

I understand that:

a) The NRL controls the rights for these products and

b) The NRL does not tolerate illegal streaming/broadcasting of its product

But given the lack of television coverage for the Holden and NSW Cups I was curious to know if there was any leniency for amateur footage of games not broadcasted by Foxtel.

In my particular situation, I am interested in filming Holden Cup and NSW Cup games relating to the Parramatta Eels and making the footage available for supporters as a video on demand (VOD) via services like YouTube and Vimeo.

Obviously if the NRL does not consent to amateur coverage of non-televised games I will not pursue the matter further but it does lead me to one final question.

In the event that the NRL does not tolerate the amateur coverage of entire NYC/NSW Cup games, does it assent to highlight packages cut from amateur footage?

Thank you in advance for your assistance and I apologise if I was a bother!

Your Sincerely,

John (That's me!)

Hi John (me again!),

Thanks for your email.

Unfortunately, we are unable to consent to the arrangement you have outlined in your letter.

Our broadcast and digital partners pay significant sums for the rights to broadcast QLD and NSW Cup matches, and we have certain obligations to ensure that third parties do not produce coverage of those matches (irrespective of whether that match is broadcast), which cuts across the rights of our broadcast partners' rights. This is particularly so in circumstances where the NRL itself is considering video on demand services. I also note that if a match is broadcast, there are some exceptions under the "fair dealing" rules of the Copyright Act, but we don't think that applies to your proposal.

It's good to see that you are supporting the game at grass roots level, and we welcome your feedback.

Again, the NRL are working on providing this service in the future.

Kind regards

Well, at least you got a reply I guess. Early last year they cut the access to video replays/streaming of NRL games through the one source that was legally viewable outside Aus/NZ. Then they didn't replace it when anything. Despite providing a contact email address for people with questions re coverage options, they never answered any of my enquiries (I was working overseas at the time). Complete amateurs, and they wonder why fans feel alienated.

I think the most annoying part for me is that I would be completely willing to cease any activity in regards to filming said games the moment the NRL and/or Foxtel deliver a genuine solution.

Until that day we are left with a handful of Holden Cup and NSW Cup games televised on Foxtel, awful online highlight packages for the NSW Cup and absolutely zilch in the way of Holden Cup coverage online.

The NRL Digital Pass is a step in the right direction but even there the NRL are having considerable teething problems with server stability.

I got that NRL digital pass a couple of weeks ago and run it via Apple TV to my tv. The picture quality is pretty bad on the big screen but it'll do me for $1.99 per week.

So with the global bye in the NRL and Holden Cup, does anyone think that some of our 20s might turn out for Wenty this Sunday?

Wenty have a decent backline but you could plausibly promote a half or a couple of backrowers.

On the other hand, does anyone think some of the current NRL squad might get a run?

Important to note the legal talk in their reply forty. They said you couldn't do it the way you proposed (which was too vague for them).

If you were to take footage and use it for personal purposes, then there is no issue. To show it to friends (via whatever method) they have also not forbidden. They just said you cannot do it in an official way that they sanction.

So don't ask them again, their position is clear. You are allowed to share in any way not directly outlined in your prior email (ie as an official provider).

From now on you will know if you crossed the line because they will contact you.

Please send me a PM with a link to highlights/ footage of your hobby.
