Great footy from Wenty!

Fui throws the short ball to Mossop who pushes through the sliding defence and then offloads to Pewhairangi to put the fill-in half into the clear!

Api quickly turns the ball back to Justin Hunt, who scorched up in support and the livewire fullback crosses under the posts to give Wenty the lead.

Hunt converts his own try.

Wenty now lead Cronulla 24-18

Wenty are starting to open Cronulla up the middle and Ben Jones nearly breaks through behind the markers.

Massive set for the Magpies, as they make roughly 70m from the kickoff but Matterson can't put the icing on it as his bomb is too deep and is taken in goals for 20m restart. Matterson's bombs have let him down somewhat today as he has failed to find range with a good deal of them.

Cronulla pick up a dubious penalty for a late hit which looked fine to me.

The tap restart gives them a full set in Wenty's redzone and after repelling the initial attack, Wenty are busted open from a questionable pass from Manumalelealii. The Samoan rep puts Masima over for his hat trick and the backrower takes the ball behind the posts for the easy conversion attempt.

The two points are added.

Cronulla hit back to lock the game up at 24-all.

65min gone.

Matterson finds a way to inject himself into the game, this time while defending.

He reads the Cronulla attack perfectly and anticipates the short ball to the backrower on his outside shoulder. He darts forwards at the point of release for the pass and snatches the pill for an intercept and heads 40m down field to score against the run of play!

Big play from the young man.

Hunt converts from 10m to the right of the sticks.

Wenty quickly take the lead back 30-24

67min gone.

Wow...huge call in Wenty's favour there!

Matterson fired a quality cut out ball but it is dropped by Morgan (?) and Cronulla toe the loose ball ahead, where Wenty retrieve it. The ref has shockingly ruled that the advantage was played and Wenty keep possession.

The Magpies waste no time gifting the ball back to the Sharks after an unnecessary offload near halfway sees Cronulla with ball back in their hands.

They punish Wenty for disrespecting possession as a sweeping backline move engineered by Gardener puts Jacob Gagan over in the corner.

Cronulla fail in their first conversion attempt of the day.

Cronulla trail Wenty 28-30

71min to go.

Wenty show some incredible desperation in their scramble, shutting down some dangerous second phase play on their line in consecutive tackles to get the ball back.

A surging run from Matterson takes play over halfway. Massive run in the context of the set for Wenty.

Pewhairangi puts in an ugly but effective kick on the back of the Matterson run and Cronulla have plenty of work to do from their own half.

They get assistance from Wenty as there is yet another infringement for a high shot. Some what bizarrely, the Sharks opt to take a tap on halfway instead of looking to find touch.

Gardner nearly slides through down our right-edge but Wenty pull him down.

The Sharks come back to posts where Wenty meet them equally once more before running it on the last down our left. A fast cutout ball looks to have generated an overlap but a desperate jam from Rawalui isolates the Cronulla centre and Wenty are able to push up and complete the turnover tackle.

Great awareness from Justin Hunt as he aniticpates the chip kick from Cronulla and rushes forwards to take the ball on the full.

Wenty finally get a penalty of their own after Alvaro is up ended in a dangerous tackle.

The touch finder is marked at 20m out from Cronulla's goal line and with less then 2min on the clock, Wenty have the chance to close out the game.

Never mind that. Wenty lose the ball early in the tackle count and with 1min left, Cronulla will look to go the length of the field to take the game...

Cronulla roll the dice down our right-edge but the improved defensive effort in the second half continues and they are forced to put through an extremely optimistic kick.

Hunt is well positioned for one final clean up job and dives on the ball with seconds to go. Danny Howard has the last hit up and is driven into touch as the siren hollers.

Full Time

Wenty dft. Cronulla 30-28

Sounds like a great comeback from the boys who were down in troops without Kaysa, Kelly etc.

Consistency in D, just like first grade seems a massive issue

Well, that was a nail biter! Certainly not the highest quality encounter but Wenty come away with the two points after reeling in a considerable lead.

Justin Hunt continues his impressive form at the back, constantly finding a way to put himself in the right places at the right times. Did alright with the goal kicking boot after relieving Pewhairangi.

Lee Mossop produced a solid return in his first game in Australia. There were some good carries, strong defence and a nice offload or two in what was a fair opening showing. It will be interesting to see how long he is given in this grade to get his match fitness up but there was certainly enough to suggest he can have an impact in the NRL.

Fellow Wenty debutante Ryan Matterson made a splash in his first NSW Cup game. Though not as dominant as his NYC efforts, the young half showed he could mix it with the big boys nabbing two tries and defending with intent. There were glimpses of his best with some of his passes to Ma'afu (on the left in the first half) and Morgan (on the right in the second half) but his kicking game was out of sorts for the majority of the match. He found the confidence to attack with his running game in the second half and looked genuinely dangerous when he took the ball in two hands to the line.

A pleasing effort on the whole though and much like Goodall before him, he will give the coaching staff plenty of food for thought about a follow-up game.

Elsewhere Wenty were well served by Issac Maliota, who continues to be a revelation off the bench. There is a bit of Junior Paulo about the monstrous bookend and his stint from the bench turned the tides in the ruck. With Fui failing to provide the spark to compliment Mossop's workrate, Maliota meshed well with Alvaro in the second rotation giving Wenty the much needed go-forward.
