This is a news item posted on PI makes interesting reading and admits what we've been saying about an over abudance of fowards and a need to sign some backs.

PENRITH ANSWERS MEDIA REPORTS ON EARLY RELEASE OF PLAYERS
Jun 30 - Penrith will listen to proposals from any club interested in some ot its high profile forwards, the club's General Manager of Rugby League, Michael Leary, said tonight.

He was commenting on media reports that the club wanted to offer an early release to players such as Ben Ross or Joe Galuvao at the end of this season.

"That's not the situation at all," Leary said. "We don't want to release anyone.

"However, the fact is we have a good crop of quality forwards and a shortage in the inside backs at the moment.

"Our results so far this year have shown that is our weak spot - and we have to do something about it before next season.

"With the salary cap as it is, we cannot afford to hold onto all our established forwards, shore up the contracts of some of our promising local juniors and go into the market place for a quality back.

"So we will listen to any proposal from any club that is interested in seeking an early release for some of our forwards.

"At this point nobody has approached us but the media reports are so strong that we felt the need to clear the air."

I'd prefer it to be Joe out of everyone. Will be a shame to see anyone leave though.

At least it pretty much means they're going to enter the market looking for a new centre.

anyone think that Ross wants to leave because of the fight early in the year between Clinton and him?

If thats the case...Bye Joel

Why would they *listen* to any proposal for an early release on Ben Ross?? He is one of our best!!! Holy sh*t!!

The problem was that they released a lot of our backs and those backs we didnt release and had in abundance a couple of years ago, they had no choice but to turn into 2nd Rowers eg. Pommeroy, Danny Galea etc. What's doing? You have to feel sorry for the likes of those that were released or told they had to change positions or leave because now we have an opportunity for those who should have been at their peak in their preferred positions to fill the missing spots. I dunno, what can you say or do?

Yeah. Perhaps Ross or Clinton should go, re-sign Crossman for fairly cheap to replace whoever goes. And F Puletua may have to go as well.

Then if Joe goes as well that should free up a few hundred k to buy 1 or 2 quality players. Perhaps a centre and a 5/8. Though we'll see how Wallace goes on the weekend to see if we're going to need a new 5/8.

I can see us letting go Crossman, Rogers, Ross and Galuvao and signing jack sh*t..

When we should be really getting rid of useless fringers like Danny Galea. Sorry. I know people have raps on him..but for a "Solid defensive centre" he regularly misses tackles.

There is NO QUALITY OUTSIDE BACKS LEFT BOYS! NONE! NADA!

unless you want someone like Steven Bell who is 30

I look at DG as having played out of position for quite awhile and then thrown back into his junior posi, it must be hard to become a specialist when your regularly playing out of position. Everyone is not like Gower and can adapt and even Gower took 12 months or so to find his regular feet playing half.

We'll they've basically said if any forwards want to go we'll let them so they can buy someone else.

I just hope they let one of the established ones go rather than a whole bunch of our youngsters or I can see us in the same situation in 2 or 3 years time, except we'll have a shortage of forwards and a whole bunch of backs that can't get a run in first grade.

If Clinton/Ross and Joe went as well as someone like F Puletua or Rogers that would free up around 400k.

I also agree, DG much better suited as a backrower.

What I don't understand is why we have to let these players go.

Like seriously.... look at the list in the other thread of who we've lost and purchased.

Preston, Ben Ross and Luke Priddis in the last 3 years are the only ones we have kept...the rest like Roberts etc and Franze...are going or have left

so the ratio is like 18:3

WHY ISN"T THERE MONEY! WHY!

Why can't we sign a quality outside back NOW!..

There has to be some questions asked about how lenient they are with their chequbook, because we gotta take a hardline sometime and give players what they are worth and not overinflated prices. Clubs like St. George, Roosters and Dogs manage to stay under the cap with their rosters and we can't even have any money free at all after the departures of high profile players like Sattler, Girdler, Lang and Whaitura?

Its all too puzzling for me

and if they are deciding to go for a quality back...they are not going to get it in Australia.

They mustn't be that happy of a team if they have to be releasing players.

If Ross goes...there would be a good $175,000-$200,000
Galuvao would free up around $250,000
Rogers would free up around $75,000
Crossman $75,000

must be one hell of a bloody outside back they want to sign.

After reading that again ... the club hasnt said they would give any specific person an early release but will listen ... so it's a media bang up about Ross. It has to be .... they couldnt be that silly to give up a current Qld representative. lol.

PK have u seen some of the decisions made by the club

LMAO

it would not be a surprise at all for mine.

If they let Crossman AND Ross Go, we are destined for the spoon next year because you will NEVER EVER win a competition without 4 first grade quality props at your club...and if these two go...we'll only have Clinton who is very hot and cold.

I got the impression from the article that they wanted to release some top liners in order to shore up those juniors and get some quality centres.

well if we are going to release forwards RELEASE BACKROWERS!

we have too many NOT PROPS! for christs sake

Luke Swain, Joe Galuvao, Danny Galea, Ben Rogers, David McLean they can all go.

Surely to christ they'd have the money then to secure a couple of juniors and a centre.

My estimates would be:

Clinton: ~170k
Ross: ~180k
Joe: ~180k
Crossman/Puletua/Rogers et al ~50-60k each

Plus Clayton is already another free 60k or so.

A couple of them leave and we could easily have $450k to spend. Jamie Lyon anyone?

And I think Ross was only specifically mentioned because he is one of the ones listed in media reports as being given an early release. Although I haven't seen those reports myself.

The article says 'high profile forwards' Joe is the only high profile player there really.

Still, a big cleanup could be had and over 600K could probably be freed up.

Joe was reported to be on $250,000 and for an international forward that is reasonable.

Ross would be close to $200,000 being a SOO player

Very rarely will u find players like Crossman and Rogers on 50-60k. They will be between that and 100K, but say we keep them right.

Add to that Donato's money....be on around $50,000 destined to play PL...add Clayton's money $60-80,000 add Franzes around 60,000 and thats a total of

$630,000

AND IF JAMIE LYON is going to cost us $450,000, then I don't want him
