OMG Common sense...

Before Joe's last contract upgrade I read in the paper he was on 90k. Must have been a hell of an upgrade.

Come signing time I'd say Crossman and Rogers would be worth 70-90k but whenever they signed their last contract they wouldn't have even cracked first grade yet.

Crossman signed a 1 year deal last season i believe and so did Rogers.

Joe's last upgrade was to "secure his family" and he got the money in order to do that.

I know, i know but come on ... not Ross. He lives for Penrith. He just about breathes Penrith. He is so much Penrith that even the locals have a hard time living up to the local tag with him around the place. I just would not get it, admittedly I have not seen Ben Ross in the flesh for quite some time so the body language would say it all for me and it will be definately a question I will be putting to him when I do see him in the flesh. It would be like looking at Satts again being absolutely devastated.

Further clarification from the media manager
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It does not necessiarly mean Ben and Joe are going. But the salary cap forces clubs to make choices. The Roosters, as you know, have been unloading players in numbers. Other clubs hsve been affected, too.

We would like to hold onto everyone but - as I said - the salary cap means we cannot hold onto all our forwards, keep our most promising local juniors and go into the market for a quality back.

A number of people on this site have been saying for some time that our weakness is in the inside backs. We acknowledge that and we know that we have to do something about it before next season.

When the rumours began to fly tonight I spoke to Mick Leary and we agreed that the best thing to do was to state plainly the position we find ourselves in.

We are not over the salary cap but we cannot do what we need to do without making some changes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So basically we can read from that, that some fowards will be going and we will be attempting to sign a quality outside back.

Another player to let go

Brett Howland

Sorry...he is 29 years old and not getting any younger or faster. That'd free up a good $90,000 or so.

And bring kids like Daniel King up to premier league for a taste.

but why Joe and Ross in the first place?

Why not guys like Howland, Frank Puletua, Danny Galea, Ben Rogers, Luke Swain...surely to christ that'd free up enough to re-sign Crossman and Pomeroy and look for a centre, because none of the centres currently on the market will be commanding much pay because there arn't that many around.

"keep our most promising local juniors" Well that's basically why they are saying Ross, Galuvao and they could throw Clinton in there because they are not local juniors. I wonder who they consider as our "most promising" local juniors?

Wouldn't that make them worth more? Laws of supply and demand etc.

You seem to be the off-contract guru, what centres are off contract this year? Ones that would slip straight into first grade.

The only "Quality" centres off contract would be:
Steven Bell - Melbourne
Marc Calderwood - Leeds
Albert Torrens (old) - Dragons
Shane Elford - Likely to be re-signed by Tigers now that they lost their chance at Berrigan.

Thats pretty much it

I remember Roo saying something on here that he was a Parramatta junior last year. I do remember questioning this because I thought Clinton was a Penrith Junior. Can't remember who won the discussion now. The discussion was whether Riverstone was under the Penrith district or Parramatta one.

Or the discussion could have been that he was with the Parramatta Grades before coming to Penrith. Oh lord I can't remember - I just know i questioned it.

What doesn't make a whole lot of sense is that they now admit we have a problem in the centres, but they still play backrowers in the centres. They obviously don't think our young centres are ready but we don't have much to lose anymore and we can't play much worse than we did on the weekend. I don't understand how Dyer hasn't been given a go yet. He can play centre I'm pretty sure.

Mick you ask why ross and gualavo?

I don't think it's so much a case of wanting to let these players go I think it merely a case that they have been used as examples of the players they could let go simply because their names have already been mentioned with regards to rumours of potentially being released.

I agree Cainen on Dyer. Dyer has been getting frustrated in games maybe that could be it ... maybe they don't think he's disciplined enough??

Luke Dyer must be the most frustrated player in the NRL. He left Penrith for Melbourne so he can have a go at first grade but all he got was a line behind Slater, Steve Turner, and Greg Inglis, now that he's back at Penrith, he's still stuck. Give the kid a go.

Dyer isn't and probably will never be up to first grade standard.

He's a good back up but he'll never get and never should get a start..because there should be better centres out there.
