No I'm saying it's easier. If I'm a player i can now lay in the ruck with a 1 point lead with 6 again being the ramification in which time my defensive line will be set.

If it is a 3 point or more lead and we are really struggling ill juat commit a facial.

Just stick to it always being a penalty and sin bin.

Where in the rules does it say it can’t be a bin and penalty?

Easily the best/cleanest way I have heard for cleaning up the ruck and stopping the wrestle is to outlaw 3 man tackles but instead of making it a penalty if you have 3 men in the tackle just have it a repeat of the tackle. So if the 3 man tackle happens on tackle 4 the ball is played etc but it remains tackle 4. I just don't see any problem with that rule and it would get rid of so much garbage.

Agree with T Goon, if a third man comes in he should be shot by a sniper situated in the grandstand or on a grassy knoll if the ground doesn't have a grand stand.

Ive had many pub conversations (before lockdowns) with mates about the ruck, and ideas to improve it. Almost all of them have pros but also cons.

I like ideas like this, and I’m not one to shoot down anyone’s thoughts on these forums, against the trend of many others.

The only thing I truly believe in changing rules of the game is that they must make it easy for the referees to rule on. Not easy to achieve, but unless doesn’t add an extra burden to a ref - especially now only one ref - then I’d prefer to leave something as is.

My major beef with the rules is lost ball/strip penalties. I truly believe it’s guesswork ruling in it and it drives me nuts. But how to change the rule?

The only way I can see is let defenders have the ability to strip the ball no matter how many tacklers, as it used to be. Will take a burden off the referee, but what the knock on effect to the gameplay would be could be detrimental to the spectacle.

Players will be automatically sin-binned if they give a ruck penalty away and the bunker will increase its monitoring of the play the ball in sweeping new changes ahead of the NRL’s return on May 28.

– There will be a ruck spotter in the bunker who will assist the referee during breaks in play.

More f@cking bunker. Last thing we need.

It doesn't, which is the issue.

We are relying on the refs to determine intent and rule differently based on the game situation.

Isn’t that we do anyway? Only after repeated penalties or try scoring situations does the bin get used.

So what has changed? The option to play on if there is no need to blow a penalty

Sometimes a penalty hurts the attacking team

The only idiots I hear even suggesting this stupid change is you and Perth whinge. It's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Cowboys - pass it to Lolo.... which 2 players are going to stop him? Exactly the same for Papalii, Haas, Fifita, NAS and any number of other players in the comp who are difficult to tackle. We'll have aerial ping pong scores because no fricken team will be able to defend their line. Please stop!!!

If cleaning up the ruck is really what they want to do they need to revisit the referee crackdown from a few years ago and tell the Channel 9 team to pull their heads in and give it time. We were so close to cleaning it up last time. So disappointing.

Why not just use 3 guys to stop him? All it will cost is a tackle. Big deal.

That could turn the game back to 'unlimited tackle' and it is dumb. Every side will just recruit big players that are difficult to tackle and direct them at the small blokes. It would turn the game to shit. You would just have 5 or 6 big blokes in your side taking turns hitting it up and you would never get past tackle 3. The team with the ball will score a try every set.

Let it go. Please stop.

Some interesting ideas here. We defiantly need to do something to open the game up, I love rugby league but freaking hell the game has became boring over the past decade.

I always thought the best way to open the game up would be for the ref to call held sooner, stopping the dancing and 3rd man in ? But as others pointed out this would probably lead to more dummy half running.

Giving this new 6 again rule some thought it could be a go-er :D looking forward to seeing it implemented.

I don’t want it like touch but something between what we have now and touch is ideal

This would not eventuate. 2 men are totally capable of tackling JT and the other big guys, it happens all the time.

That is just as true a statement as saying it takes 3 men to bring JT down all the time. Quite often it takes 4 players.

Edit. I'm all for introducing new but good rules to the game. Your suggestion is not good, partly for the reasons I have outlined but secondly it makes the game more difficult for referees. Everyone complains about the refereeing but nothing is done to make the rules easier for them. We should be trying to reduce the grey areas or the referee discretion, not increasing it. The more black and white the rules the easier it is for them. The fans will also understand the game better because there are too many instances in games where they are interpreted completely differently depending on which referee you get.

it’s amazing to think up until 10 years ago it only took one or two players to tackle someone! Who’d have thought it possible?

that’s why you change substitute numbers at same time, to stop giant men rotating every 15mins. Watching games from 15 years plus back it’s the biggest difference,
two men up top, then one down below, two men up top wrestling away whilst the three slowly peel off. It’s sht and the biggest issue in making the game more enjoyable to watch.

We can thank the team you support for where we are.
