Its not all doom and gloom for parra guy if we dont get the OX.
This is a very good football team and will make us proud next year and everyone that wants to base our year on if we get orford or not needs to have Faith in what we have. A great forward pack( potential to be the best) some great outside backs and the worlds best player...Lets not get greedy now.

I don't get Parra fans sometimes.
One moment we're all in agreeing that we need a halfback, any halfback.
Then we get linked to Orford and there are complaints here and there!

Problem is we've got a missing link. A solid halfback who can work off the forwards and get the ball to our great outside backs. No point in having great forwards and great backs if there's nothing to link one to the other.

Exactly, it's like that feeling you get when you upgrade your comp into a beast and get a new 1080p monitor only to realize you didn't get the HDMI cable.

Atm, we don't have that certain HDMI cable(Orford).

In my opinion whilst Orford may not be everyone's choice to be the number 7 in 2011 he will bring the following attributes to our team that has been lacking in the last two years;
  • established and experienced half back
  • good kicking game both short and long
  • direction in attack and reasonable defensive half
  • experience to assist mortimer and humble to develop
  • ability to take the pressure of Hayne in attack and provide opportunities with kicks for Hayne, Burt, Tahu etc.
  • leadership qualities that will be invaluable assistance for hindmarsh
  • less missed opportunities on last plays

According to Fox, this means he is Parra bound:

Super League side Bradford have continued their rebuilding with the signing of Canberra halfback Marc Herbert, which is expected to pave the way for Matt Orford to return to the NRL with Parramatta.

The 23-year-old Raiders player has signed a 12-month contract with the Bulls and becomes new coach Mick Potter's 10th recruit for 2011.

He is expected to be a straight replacement for the 32-year-old Matt Orford, who this week formally sought a release from the two years left on his three-year contract after becoming homesick and is expected to join Parramatta.

"Marc is a player I have been aware of for some time," said Potter. "I am sure he will make a very good Super League player."

Herbert has made 23 appearances for the Raiders but missed much of this season with an ankle injury from which he has now recovered.

"I am really excited to be joining the Bulls," he said.

"Super League will be a different experience for me and I intend to make the most of the opportunity."

On another note, did anyone else hear Brandy on Sports Today?

He said Gower was all set to sign a new deal with Bayonne, but they took the deal off the table at the last minute after he returned to France after shoulder surgery. Brandy said at the moment, he is in France and clubless.

I had to read that again, I thought you said he was clueless...and I thought to myself "he's onto something there"...

How many more oldies can you guys fit into your top 25??

I joked about the Eels fielding a side in the Masters Games earlier but seriously if you get this pensioner you probably could!

Buy old, sell young....great plan Ossie

A 20 year old isn't at his peak; a 30 year old is.

Orford might be just past it but he's better than a kid with little experience.

Young players might be good for the future but with the salary cap there's little point building for the future - you're better off just buying players who are at their peak. Young players are only valuable if they come cheap, with the understanding that they'll get paid more (and take up more of the cap) as they improve.

But some other club might also offer them more as they improve, so as I said, what's the point?

Here's Parra's squad for next year if they sign Orford (and their ages next year):

33 Orford
32 Moimoi
32 Hindmarsh
31 Tahu
31 Grothe
31 McGuire
30 Burt
30 Webb
29 Maitua
29 Shackleton
29 Robson
27 Smith
26 Reddy
26 Poore
25 Horo
25 Keating
23 Hayne
23 Mannah
23 Humble
22 Mortimer
22 Mitchell

Of those you could say both Grothe and Tahu are past their peak (being outside backs) but are still above average standard for first grade.

Orford is probably past his peak but he's a half - they can play at close to their peak for a long time, and Orford is younger than current Australian and Queensland five-eighth Darren Lockyer. Lockyer might have lost some speed but he has gotten smarter, just like Orford. Ditto McGuire - he's 3 years younger than Lockyer.

A benefit of these older guys is cooler heads on the field, and better leadership and mentoring both on-and off-field.

Moimoi and Himdmarsh are both past their peaks but are both still well above first grade standard, and both are 3 years younger than current Australian and Queensland front-rower Petero Civoniceva.

A player at 32, especially a forward, is still very close to his peak. Likewise a 33 year old halfback. The only thing really limiting them is increased risk of injury.

Webb is the same age as current Queensland forward Ashley Harrison and current Australian international Paul Gallen. Maitua and Shackleton are both younger than these guys.

At the other end of the scale we have Hayne and Mannah who will both be 23 next year and have both already played Origin.

I dont think age matters that much anymore cause you can basicaly sing half a team in the off season...Also to win a comp now with the salary cap you dont need a perfect team just a good one.Not a great one.Was Saints george any better than the year before or where every other team worse?
As i said before...We where not getting beat by 20+ every game and that was with a forward pack going backwards a backline out of form a useless hooker and our halves doing JACK...PLus internal fighting media on our backs an our coach beeing questioned. We have a few promising juniors ready to step up and a few solid signings. Its not all doom and gloom!!!

You contradict yourself a bit there i think.

the 8 players you have listed as over 30 are all past their best (maybe Fui is still close) but for the rest it is not even close. The guys under 25 are far and away our best.

As for Orford - just because your old doesn't mean you are a good leader or good for developing other halves. some blokes aren't good mentors, some people don't command respect from their peers. Orford used to be having constant arguments on the field with the likes of Monaghan and Watmough, so one can only imagine what happened off the field.

Robson used to be Orford's backup at Manly and Robson wasn't miraculously turned into a superstar just by Orford's presence!

If you sign a beat up, washed up Orford what are your chances of winning the comp in 2011? 1%, if you use that money to lock up a few 20-22 year olds what are your chances of winning the comp? still about 1% but at least you now have a future...

The problem there is that if you sign up a few 20 years old for the future, you obviously have to sign them for a few years wheras we know Orford is only for this year, maybe next. You sign the younger guys for a few years you kiss you chances goodbye of signing the likes of Cooper, Quade, Thurston. Sign Orford for a year and we still have the money available for 2012.

well the choice is this..

Matt Orford V without Matt Orford + constant whinging (that will do nothing) that we deserve better

it's a no brainer really, his experiance abeit for only a year will be invalueble.
