PINT-SIZED Melbourne halfback Matt Orford plans to prolong contract negotiations with the Storm after winning selection in the 25-man Australian squad announced this week.

The in-form Storm halfback has begun preliminary talks with Melbourne but last night refused to rule out a possible return to Sydney.

Orford, a Central Coast junior, admits he likes the idea of returning to the NSW if the NRL were to grant the region a licence.

"I've been at the club for so long but for me to stay things have to be right," Orford said.

"It's a pretty important decision and I'm not going to rush into anything, I have to consider a lot of things."

"I suppose moving back to Sydney would be a consideration but if the deal is right here I'd love to stay.

"All these things come into consideration and if things aren't right I might have to look elsewhere."

Winning selection in the Kangaroos squad means Orford's world has gone from bad to brilliant in a matter of weeks.

The wizard halfback had "an experience to forget" when a suspected brain clot threatened his future just one week before the season kick-off.

Now, three weeks later, he is in with a chance for a spot in the Test side.

"It's always been a dream and a goal [to be named], there's a lot of good halfbacks around though," Orford said.

"It's nice to have your name in the mix . . . [It's better than] the strange week I had before we started the season, I'm glad to have that behind me, put it that way.

"Now I'm just enjoying my football and hopefully getting ourselves in the winners' circle."

Orford is off contract with the Storm at the end of this season and admits he is no certainty to remain at the Melbourne-based club.

Among Orford's considerations have been the recent re-signing of coach Craig Bellamy and the Storm's attempts to secure young gun fullback Billy Slater, who is also off contract.

Orford has been following with interest the fortunes of the wannabe Coast team, the Bears, backed by John Singleton.

"If the Central Coast team was to get up then I would love to be a part of that, but there are some doubts and question marks about that," he said.

"I might have to wait and see, there's a lot of speculation about that side.

"I'd like to but things, like Melbourne, would have to be right. I grew up on the Central Coast but I have to do what is the best for my football."

For the moment, Orford will look to put Melbourne in a winning position as they go into this weekend's clash with the Broncos.

"I don't think we've had a win against the Broncos for a few years, they've had the wood on us even though they've been tight matches," Orford said.

"They are just such a big side and I think if we can start with containing their forwards then we know we can score points. If we defend well, that will win us the game

wants to return to the central coast, maybe newcastle should pursue him seriously, if the central coast isnt admitted then next to melbourne wed have to be a pretty good chance of signing him

I think we should definently pursue Matty Orford! We still dont know about Joey's future with us and if we wait around we may miss out on a quality player. Its my opinion that Orford is the 2nd best halfback in the game, he would make the perfect replacement, can kick, pass, run to the line and kick goals, sometimes. Cmon boys we cant let Orford pass us if the opportunity arises grab it with both hands and buy our new saviour :D

newcastle is only a little further north :)

to be honest Johns is not worth holding on to for a few more years if we can get hold of Orford for 6 or 7 years. it's a no brainer....

the thing is we havent got a half back as strong as him coming through, kurt works well as a 5/8, honestly i agree wiht alex, injury prone johns who doesnt even want to be at the club, or orford for 2/3- 3/4 of his money, no brainer, i would have gone for johns prior to this week, but after al thats happened and what hes displayed...

If Orford is interested go for it I say,Reading Johns column in the Tele today, it seems more likely that he is going to play mind games with us for the rest of the season, and really we can't sit around on our hands doing nothing, both papers today have rumours about Union being revived. He himself has repeated the "I'll be doing it for myself" line. The club need to know where they stand early on, if not then we have to move on and assume he wont be here.

I say we go for it and sign Orford, he has been going great guns over the past few seasons and really could slot into our team well, as a bonus he wouldn't cost as much as Joey and we could use the remainder of our salary cap to increase a few junior player's contracts. 8)

johns is gone - the telegraph article said as much today. sign orford 1 july and get a good start to the post-joey era.

Orford would be the ideal signing. But unfortunately I don't see it happening. We rarely sign big name players, and Orford is one of the biggest names around. Would solve a hell of a lot of problems if we did though...

The same article has been discussed in a Storm forum at a different address and the article has since been found out to be incorrect.

Its all talk, thank god.

 No him wanting to be with the Central Coast and what not.

The last official news rather than speculation is that Orford (and Billy Slater) will put pen to paper as soon as next week.

For Orford to effectivley turn down Melbournes contract offers, waiting for a Central Coast team which hasn't even been given a lisence (and in fact may not get one in the near future) is stupid.

By the time the news comes around concerning the 16th team (whether there be one or not) Melbourne will have spent the money on the wealth of players we have off contract, leaving Orford high and dry.

I do beleive Newcastle should and will re-sign Andrew Johns. He will be back.

Yes but Orford is signifigantly younger than Johns and therfore barring injury has alot more quality football in front of him. Not to mention the fact that he would be alot cheaper than Joey. Not to mention that Joey is far from a certainty to re-sign and is not necessarily going to return anywhere near his best. I think we should seriously test the market for top quality halves before commiting to another contract for Joey. As magnificent as he's been he is becoming very injury prone, and is getting old.

I agree with most but I think Orford will cost you more than Johns.

Johns is coming off a career threating Knee injury and how he will perform next year is a lottery. To ask for anything more than half of what he is on now would be stupid IMO.

On the other hand Orford is like you said a player on the rise. Therefore his asking rate will be doing the same, and as a top quality player it won't be cheap.

If we go after Orford we'll have the money, "The knights rarely make big name signings" You are correct with that Chinorocks, but when they do target someone they usually get him (Kennedy was the last one) Remeber this if we don't re-sign Johns we will have a fair bit of cash lying around. I wouldn't discount the Knights going after him. The last report I heard Earl was that Orford was going to wait until the deadline before deciding where his future lies.

Well if that is the case then I think he is stupid.

Like I said the last thing I heard out of Melbourne was that he will put pen to paper pretty soon.

Who knows really.

i'm pretty convinced johns is off to union. it is pretty clear that while we have some great talent coming through, we dont have a halfback that is NRL capable - otherwise he would have played for us yesterday.

what are our options? we have roughly $500K to spend on the position - we wont have to spend anywhere near that - not even on orford. which halfbacks are even on the market for next year? finch is tied up, luke dorn in hindsight would have been a fantastic signing - he must be kicking himself for going to the roosters instead.

orford should be our man. screw the 30 june anti-tampering clause. tell him we want him and the money is there if he wants in. then talk to him july 1 and seal the deal.
