Origin 2013 NSW side

Hazem scored lots of tries too, and was the best goal kicker of all time. Luke Burt was another that could find the line and was also handy with the boot. Despite this there wasn't an abundance of calls for either of them to play origin (until the feel good PR media push to get Haz a spot in a dead rubber, obviously).

And those 2 actually COULD kick goals. Merritt, despite your claims earlier to the contrary, is a horrendous goal kicker (all time record of 58%)
And how well has that line of logic been working? Our wingers haven't done shit in Origin for years.

The biggest compliments we seem to able to pay is them not being totally embarassed by their opposites

The thing about picking Merritt is that those attacking opportunities he's good at capitalising on will be few and far between in Origin.

More than half of his job in Origin would be bringing the ball back from his own goal line. If picked I'd be concerned about a) him getting dominated and pushed backwards and b) his willingness to get in there and take a run from dummy half in the first place. To me it's a weakness of his game at club level.

Neither Boyd or Slater are known for their ball returns, unless it's against a scattered defence. Much like Merritt.

Except the comparison is kind of redundant given those two are superior players and Australian and Queensland mainstays.

Besdies, Boyd runs from dummy half all the time and is actually pretty effective at it. Slater doesn't as often but his kick returns are more than acceptable.

McManus has been pretty awesome for the Knights this year. Definitely in the great club winger mould.

Is it confirmed B. Morris will be out?

If it is I wouldn't be surprised to see Gordon Hayne & Uate be the two wingers and fullback. Not sure which of the first two would be fullback.

Baaahahaha, Souffs fans are funny. You're clutching at straws when your example of Merritt not being a one-dimensional, flat track bully flop over specialist is him running 5 metres from dummy half and beating an offside player after somebody else runs the length of the field and does all the hard work. Give me a f**king break, Scott Dureau could have scored that try.

It will be a joke if he is selected over Uate, Taufua or Ferguson.

1. Hayne
2. B. Morris
3. Jennings
4. J. Morris
5. Gordon

If B. Morris ruled out
1. Hayne
2. Gordon
3. Jennings
4. J. Morris
5. Uate

It's not redundant because only NSW and their fans are stupid enough to think a winger should be selected based on dummy half running

No wonder we keep losing

I think the bolter will be Cordner.
I'm not a big fan of Merritt but I think he deserves a shot. He's got a point to prove and after the his wait I think he'd cherish the jumper a lot more than others.

We have an elite player in Lyon who couldnt give a crap yet a bloke like Merritt who'd play his heart out who can't get a go.

Not sure whether i have been watching the same origin but whenever i do watch origin the first thing i see the most is both the morris brother hogging the ball especially josh he hardly passes to his winger when there is space he always thinks he can get through and eventually gets tackled

He doesn't have to selected for good dummy half running, but it would be good if he could offer something that's worth selecting him for over the other contenders. What is it?

There is nothing he has to offer that the other guys in contention don't do as well, and mostly better.

Size? Nope.
Speed? Not compared to Uate/B. Morris
Hit-Ups/Dummy half running/Work rate? No.
Defence? Average.
Try-scoring/Finishing? Good but despite all the beat-up no better than the other contenders.
High ball? Average.

If he deserves his spot then where does he have it over the other contenders?

Speed? Very few players would run him down. Not quite the speed he once had but would still outpace 95% of players in the NRL

He wpouldn't make it over the line as much as he does if he didn't have the speed. Especially as a winger.

The NSW fullback position, vacated by Manly's Brett Stewart, is now Jarryd Hayne's to lose.

The Parramatta fullback is favoured to take the jumper for the first State of Origin encounter, at ANZ Stadium on June 5, after Stewart was ruled out for at least a month with a back injury. South Sydney's Nathan Merritt would most likely take the wing position that had originally been set aside for Hayne prior to Stewart's injury against St George Illawarra on Monday night.

However coach Laurie Daley is still eyeing off Akuila Uate and Blake Ferguson.

Daley confirmed he had planned to select Stewart, but spoke highly of Hayne's credentials. ''Hayne is a player of enormous talent - we know that,'' Daley said. ''He's always played well at Origin level, even though he's played his best football at that level on the wing. But he's a guy you wouldn't be afraid to throw in.

''But I've just got to see where it leads us over the next couple of weeks. Fingers crossed there wouldn't be any more injuries - three on the weekend was a bit hectic.''

To add to Stewart's injury, Dragons winger Brett Morris remains in doubt for the opener due to a knee injury, which has ruled him out for at least a fortnight.

Having settled on the vast majority of his first NSW squad prior to round eight, Daley may now be forced to abandon plans to inform players of their selection well in advance, given the uncertainty that the two Monday night injuries - as well as skipper Paul Gallen's knee problem - have caused in recent days.

''He was part of our plans, but the best-laid plans can go astray,'' Daley said of Stewart.

While Hayne is in the box seat, Cronulla fullback Michael Gordon remains in contention, as is Newcastle captain Kurt Gidley.

DEeeeeeaaary meeeee.

Even to be mentioned is just absurd.

To be clear, I was a fan of Gidley when he played fullback for us and thought he was ok for NSW there, but the bloke hasn't played or trained there in 2 years!

It'd be like selecting Luke Lewis on the wing for origin now.
