Origin - Disrespectful to the Kangaroos?

It's not the pinnacle for anyone outside of NSW/Queensland who don't watch/care about it. The problem is that a lot of Aussies don't seem to realise there is a world beyond their shores and the TV networks aren't stupid, they capitalise on this with the whole 'pinnacle' thing because they know the bogans will buy into it. Artificially making Origin the pinnacle lets them keep control of their product and guarantees them a midweek ratings draw three times a year, and the marketing strategy works just fine because self-aggrandizing is what a lot of Aussies do best.

Sport is 99% hype anyway, it's the same with RU and soccer in the UK. If you tell people that something is important over and over again, say it loud enough and enough times then people are going to believe you.

I suppose you need to watch an Origin live or live in Sydney or Brisbane to understand how big it is.

When i lived in Ecuador, when the national team played in soccer it was similar to State of Origin. EVERYONE would rush home, streets would close down and you'd see National jerseys everyone in support for the game.

Same here (in Sydney) with Origin, everyone just goes into Origin mode and doesn't matter where you look, people are going to watch it. (Even our trains, public buildings and VIVID light up for the Blues).

As i said before, Origin can have a positive impact in showing the strength of RL's popularity and as a spectacle, however as long as it doesn't ruin the International game then its ok in my book.

From the day origin was created the Qld jersey to Qldrs became a higher prize than a national jersey

I think OP has read too much into those quotes, come October they will be saying the same thing about the Kangaroos; its just marketing...

But the reality is that Origin is the biggest event in the RL world. Rather than spiting the match for this, we should be sifting through all of the elements of the game and applying these to other areas of the game.

I love Origin because it shows how good rl COULD be. In the presentation, in the rivalry and in the marketing, Origin is the pinnacle. We should be trying to raise everything else up to that level....

I don't think I did at all, the quotes are what they are. I understand the necessity for hype and the fact it's all Channel 9, but the fact is they basically say representing your state is the pinnacle of a players career and all the best players play in these games.

In saying all this though I really think Internationals are making headway, the trick isn't to bring the Origin interest/hype level down, it's to bring the International game up to match or beat it.

It's pretty clear what the argument is for Origin being the pinnacle. Ffs, work it out.

I'm at a loss, why is it the pinnacle when a lot of the best players aren't eligible?
I love origin, it may be the pinnacle in the eyes of some Australian rugby league players but it is not the pinnacle of the sport of rugby league.

Yeah it is weird.. I was at the game and though it's great to be there it really wasn't a great game.. Many strait after the game admitted as much but as the week has gone on the commentators have been more and more talking up how great of a "contest" it was.. It really wasn't.. I have also noticed that these "great" queensland players who are now getting quite old for Rugby League players don't often produce great Rugby League anymore.. When they played in the ANZAC test they played to win and it turned into a gritty dour game.. they did the same in the origin.. They may be playing better then the guys coming through but it's not because they are (apart from JT) brilliant anymore.. it's because they know how to grind out a game.. This being dominant in rep footy is not taking the game forward it is holding it back.. But Origin is in slow decline because the superstars coming through are not all from QLD and NSW.. they are spread around different nations including FIJI (Don't get me started on Semi and AUS)

I wouldn't shed a tear if Origin died. I enjoy it, but I hate the divide it causes to the game.

It's pretty clear that the reason it's considered the pinnacle is purely because of the attention the series receives. Massive ratings, massive crowds and massive dollars every single match. Same cant be said for Kangaroos games.

"THE NRL revealed it is in danger of turning State of Origin into the Foster’s beer of sport. Loved and adored overseas, disappearing at home."

I think Kent's a bit deluded if he thinks SoO is loved and adored overseas, unless he means PNG.

The f*ck???

The entire concept of sport is "Us vs Them". That is the idea of the contest; a winner and a loser.

Personally i think the opposite. Too much peace/harmony and we become far to introspective about our own faults. We havent had a good "Other" since 2012 when we were broke and the AFL was "taking over:roll:"

The trick for the ARLC is to create the opposition to channel the energy into a positive. Really, the ARLC should be looking for some new great fight.

NewsLTD is the obvious choice......
