Origin - Disrespectful to the Kangaroos?

An excellent article from Paul Kent (I never thought I'd say that in my life)

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...k/news-story/af0863dcac71013b73444bfdc2f3816e

He talks about this exact thing, he mainly focuses on the neglect NRL is showing towards footy teams in the bush but he also does touch on its disregard for International League too.

Its actually quite an impressive article....

K*nt has managed to bring together all of the dumbest cliques in RL into one articel. Quite an achievement......

The f*ck???

The entire concept of sport is "Us vs Them". That is the idea of the contest; a winner and a loser.

Personally i think the opposite. Too much peace/harmony and we become far to introspective about our own faults. We havent had a good "Other" since 2012 when we were broke and the AFL was "taking over:roll:"

The trick for the ARLC is to create the opposition to channel the energy into a positive. Really, the ARLC should be looking for some new great fight.

NewsLTD is the obvious choice......

You honestly think that state rivalry has helped grow the game?

Yes

It's a massive ad for the sport that is beamed all over the planet. It's drawn in kids who might other wise be playing soccer or AFL

How has it not contributed to growing the game

Oh and lol at all the Poms shooting it down too. Feeling left out so they need to snipe. Intl RL is its own worst enemy, always has been

I'm not denying the good things that Origin has done for the game, but the state rivalry or divide had undoubtedly hurt the game. It's created self interest.

Imagine if Origin didn't exist. Our only rep footy would be international.

Australia vs NZ three times a year would draw in more interest than NSW vs Qld. It appeals to a wider audience.

Would it though?

Remember only up until recently NZ was god awful, getting belted nearly every game that played against Australia.

The only thing thats hurt Intl RL is the self interest at that level, not SOO. Countries raiding smaller nations for talent (Aust included) has done far more damage than anything SOO has ever influenced

I suppose you need to watch an Origin live or live in Sydney or Brisbane to understand how big it is.

When i lived in Ecuador, when the national team played in soccer it was similar to State of Origin. EVERYONE would rush home, streets would close down and you'd see National jerseys everyone in support for the game.

Same here (in Sydney) with Origin, everyone just goes into Origin mode and doesn't matter where you look, people are going to watch it. (Even our trains, public buildings and VIVID light up for the Blues).

As i said before, Origin can have a positive impact in showing the strength of RL's popularity and as a spectacle, however as long as it doesn't ruin the International game then its ok in my book.
I live in Sydney, I'm a league fan (not an Origin fan though as it's just two Australian teams playing each other) and while I knew it was origin period (because it's when the Warriors start winning a few) I had no idea the game was on the Wednesday and in Sydney until reading about it on a forum and I walk through Darling Harbour every day.

There was a pie thing (I think they were giving away pies) in Darling Harbour about a week before but it wasn't high profile.

Origin has already ruined the international game - the first time a player chose Origin over a national team it ruined the international game.

The footyshow on Thursday had fatty saying blah blah blah about the international game we took an origin to the US once never went back blah blah blah, they don't play the game over there blah blah blah.

Ummm, fatty, the Kangaroos played the USA in 2003, the USA have had some form of local comp now for 20 years and have quailifed for their second World Cup in a row, matter of fact, if it's so non existent, how the hell did your very own son play for one of the teams in the Northern Raiders?

What complete horse shit

Self serving admins of the Int'l bodies like the NZRL and the ARL are the ones who have sunk the Int'l game. Theyve done it by continuing to cherry pick players who could and should have played for smaller nations. SOO has had minimal impact compared to that.

Tell me, did Radradra playing for Aust have anything to do with SOO? Moi Moi for NZ? Theres a bloody big list of similar scenarios
