The quality of games this weekend has been frankly unbearable. I guess it doesn't help that it involves low altitude fliers like the Dogs and Penrith to begin with, but the combination of generally poor performing teams with Origin depleted sides has not been a good look. I'd much rather give every team the weekend off then put this shit to air.

Last weeks NZ v Brisbane game was pretty grim too and that wasn't affected by origin.

With the rise of the Pacific nations, rep weekends could become a thing.

I think the Sunday origin is about getting TV comfortable with weekend origins.

If it rates the same they'll shop weekend origins next TV deal.

If and when the standalone origin period comes in it will be a huge boom for the game. Origin will be just as massive as ever (maybe even benefit from the added hype) and there will be a chance for more rep games to shine.

Most importantly though the NRL won’t be totally f**ked over. At the end of the origin period you can talk up the return to the NRL and the run to the finals. It will be a win for everyone.

I think this round is a pretty fair indication that the league is not ready for expansion.
We don't have enough playing depth to accommodate Origin and a few injuries; how can we support another team or two at 30 players each?

Discuss.

If your claiming the standard of the comp can drop so dramatically just by taking the
36 top Australian players out it, then the game is on very thin ice!

It was the same in the early 2000s when we had 14 teams.

So 2 more standalone weeks adds 2 weeks to the season.

We will be starting the season in summer!

Be realistic!

There are a lot of shit games & its got SFA to do with origin!

If anything, this origin period is the great leveller of the competition, something the salary cap isn’t

I don't mind it. You get to see some young blokes make their debut, maybe go out after work with colleagues for one of the three games, brings a few teams back to the pack who have a Salary Cap magical wand, etc.

Only issue I have is the late start-time but nothing a strong cup of coffee can't fix.

No it doesn't

There would only be a need for 24 NRL rounds, not 25 as there would be no need for byes.

That means we require 31 weeks including finals which is exactly the same as what we did a few years back when there were 26 NRL rounds + 4 week finals + rep round in early May which included city/country and ANZAC test.

Fringe first graders have to get a chance to be blooded at some stage, it’s just during this time of year you get 2 or 3 at once instead of 1 player per game any other time
