You seriously think every player isn't already insured ?
Not to the extent of covering the sort of support McKinnon looks like requiring.

The league itself may be highly insured but not individual players. How many players have you heard getting looked after when suffering career ending injuries?

Yesterday Alex was offered a job for life from the NRL.

Today the knights say that they will honour the new contract which was on the table at the time of the injury.

Wonderful sentiments from the club and NRL or damage control to avoid massive litigation ?

So far Alex has been compensated for loss of income... what about medical expenses, additional cost of living with a disability, pain & suffering, loss of consortium (giggy giggy), mental anguish & emotional distress (and the biggy) - permanent disability ?

Better call Saul ...

He's the bloke I'd be calling too...Goodman, Saul..

The only other bloke I can think of who received an injury as bad as Alex McKinnon's (worse, actually) was John Farragher back in the seventies. Did the NSW Rugby League give him much compensation? Anyone know?

Penrith set up a trust fund, to which I believe the NSWRL contributed, but not sure.

Alex McKinnon stands after spinal injury

14/1/2015

Alex McKinnon continues to inspire the Newcastle Knights with coach Rick Stone revealing he stood up on his own for the first time since suffering a devastating spinal injury in an NRL game last March.

The former Knights forward has returned to Newcastle following rehabilitation in Sydney after suffering the injury in a tackle which left the 22-year-old in a wheelchair.

"He's just finished in his rehab and he actually stood up unabated the other day ... he stood up on his own which is a terrific sort of step for Alex," Stone said.

McKinnon has spoken of his desire to fully recover and one day walk again, and last July the NRL's Rise For Alex round raised over $1.4 million towards that goal.

McKinnon will take on an active role at Newcastle this year, working alongside Stone, Knights director of football Michael Hagan and high performance coach Troy Pezet in recruitment.

Stone said McKinnon would begin his new position at the club on January 27 and will probably spend one day a week in the commercial area as well.

"That's going to be a great opportunity for Alex to get his teeth into something he really loves, footy," he told Sky Sports Radio.

"He's inspiring young men and everyone in the club will be really happy to see him back."

f**king awesome. His injury was the low point of my year. It even made me question whether I was doing the wrong thing even caring about rugby league as much as I do. I can only imagine how Alex felt.

Anyway great news. What an inspiration.

I just hope that he's had good advice and has his future earnings and all that goes with having such a disability looked after.

I'm very grateful for the support. Yet It is disappointing a personal video was leaked and aired without our permission

The media are nothing but whores.

Would he be sueing the Storm or the player/s involved in the tackle?

Depends. What if he subpoenaed their jujitsu coach and he admitted that the storm players were coached to lift then turn the player on his back because it slows down the play the ball ? The club may be the catalyst to a dangerous practice.
