11th time out of 12 matches played between the two clubs.

Do you think anyone will be silly enough to let off a flare at the derby, Suity?

Deep down, I don't think so but I wouldn't be surprised if they did.
These people are f**kwits who don't give a shit about football or their team.
Should be dug out and banned.

In saying that, I find it amusing the comments about flares. And the outrageous fear about people dying and all that shit. It's also funny that it's claimed in the msm that people are scared to go to games, yet the matches with the "SUPPOSEDLY" highest risk are the ones with the biggest crowds.
So many "families" are scared to go, eh?

Anyway, here it is again.

Did you seriously just post the same cross-code deflection link in two consecutive posts? First link worked/works fine...

I thought the 11 of 12 games was the number of Sydney derbies where flares and detonators had been set off...

While serious injury is not exactly par-for-the-course, it is not unheard of:

The article also refers to a death caused by a flare (though it seems it was the projectile aspect of the flare that did the damage).

I recall a girl getting burnt by a flare at a music festival in australia not so long ago.

I dunno. It kinda makes things look interesting. And maybe all the people standing around where they get let off are all aware of it and know how to react when someone rips one and the rippers do it firly safely ... i dunno???

I think more bad shit happens when merkins are drunk. I get the feeling these guys arent - theyre just PUMPED!

Playing down flare use at soccer games ? I can even.

“Flares are used for marine distress and are designed not to be extinguished easily or quickly,” said the Premier League. “They contain chemicals and burn at temperatures of 1600C, the melting point of steel. Smoke bombs are mainly used recreationally in paintballing and war games, but these also burn at high temperatures and are designed to be used in wide open spaces.
"They are dangerous for those with asthma or breathing difficulties and can cause panic in a tightly packed crowd. They are not designed for use in confined spaces and it is illegal to enter a football stadium with one and set it off.
“Over half of fans have now witnessed pyrotechnics at a match, and 36 per cent have been directly affected: 24 per cent have had their view of the match obscured, 10 per cent have suffered from smoke inhalation and two per cent have been affected by heat from a flare.’’
Last season, an eight-year-old was spotted bringing pyrotechnics into one Premier League match. “The child came into the ground with pyrotechnics in his rucksack and was seen passing them to members of an adult group who let them off inside the ground,” said the Premier League.

I guess the broader point is that we don't know to what extent people avoid going to games because of these things. All we can observe is the number of people who attend....not the number who don't for what ever reason.

...Some might argue that a sell out is a sell out is a sell out. There are probably enough hardcore football fans who aren't concerned about flares. The 11 out of 12 local derby stat is evidence of this.

But Barry's point is perhaps more relevant when it comes to TV ratings, membership numbers etc.

I don't go to games where I know there'll be f**kwits behaving like that (flares, detonators, pyro) in the crowd. A-League won't ever get me through a gate while A-League Clubs and Supporters are still tolerating (even celebrating) the thug element of their "active" support base.

I even avoided Parra games against the Bulldogs a while back for similar reasons. Getting out of a game and going home got a bit ugly if the "wrong" team got the result, until the Bulldogs (club and supporter base) cleaned up their act.

The Wanderers owe it to the A-League to do the same.

The flare thing wouldn't stop me going to a game by myself (hell, I've been to see Millwall in the late 90s). But it might deter me from taking my non-existent kids if I wasn't confident that the flares would be isolated to an area where my seats weren't going to b. But then again, I'd probably not care.
