soccer seems a good way to get money out of middle class suburbanites whose kids will have zero chance of becoming professional sports people
100%. They are more paying for the 'elite athlete experience', which is still fun. But yes, more allowing the customers to lie to themselves than the seller being deceptive.

or it can also be about getting kids off the street and away from their XBoxes and having them participate in community sport

not everything has an alternative agenda

Community clubs already do this. Private 'academies' cost too much to get anyone off the street. If kids are on the street it's because they're broke.

Matildas captain Sam Kerr has launced her own football academy in Australia, enrolling children aged 3 to 14 in a “progressive” and “holistic” program.

Sam Kerr Football, as the program is named, will utlitise Kerr’s personal football knowledge and expertise and incorporate elements that Kerr wished she’d had access to as an emerging footballer.

The program will use qualified football coaches and touch on Kerr’s journey in football development, as well as skill development in areas such as health and well-being, mental skills such as resilience, and nutrition and recovery. The program will prepare young footballers for, and connect them with elite development pathways.

I will wait till the academy launches to see the impact this has getting kids off the street

Just in case we're not on the same page here, I was referring to kids playing on the street, not homeless or kids living in poverty.

But yeah, let's see how it goes, sounds like a great initiative
