The basis of the decision is likely to be less conscious than the decision itself. Just as it's easier to judge others by their actions than anything less concrete, so it often goes with judging ourselves.

Why is just a more difficult question than what, I would suggest if you don't ask why then you're really in no position to label yourself left , right , centre, with any real degree of confidence.

Besides which people tend to believe they are closer to average than they are over any number of measures, politics being no different.

I don't care, Centrists are self appointed, everyone seems to believe they represent the centre, because everyone they know is either to their left or right somewhere.

also they would like everyone else to think that their opinions are well balanced and informed opinions so when they go off on some tangent it must be true because they are neither left or the right in their thinking

prior to the last election there was a online poll that you could fill out and it gave the results in 3D showing various tangents where the poll assessed peoples political stance, you probably saw it

I agree people are more likely to think their political views are in the centre but I understood they're more likely to over- or under-rate themselves in pretty much everything else.
