That merkin with the big telly @ BBC is after us again.

What relevance is emissions per person, if all of those "per persons" will make little collective difference as a whole.

People seem to be of some kind of view that if Australia stopped selling coal that the rest of the World would just stop buying it. This has to be the dumbest shit I've ever heard, as the view is based on zero evidence or from known past behaviours. Since when has one business going out of business stopped people from buying a similar product from another business?

I'm sure someone will be selling coal to those entities/countries who are building those 1600 new coal fired power stations across the globe if we decide not to. Namely Indonesia, Russia, Ukraine et al.

It's a compelling argument and one that Alan Jones hangs his hat on regularly. The thing is if rich countries like Australia refuse to do more to reduce their (very high per head) emissions, what possible incentive is there for developing or emerging countries to take the issue of climate change seriously? India, China, Asia and South America can ask – as they did in Madrid last month – WTF should they reduce emissions when Australia gives no f**ks ?

Our stance on climate change IS important, not only for the 1.3% emissions, but for the potential influence on global policy.

The but, but China argument is a convenient excuse to avoid doing anything about it by deniers and reluctant adopters.

I agree, the Alan Jones argument is tired. Its a dumb response to a dumb suggestion that the coal industry should be shut down.

We shouldn't cannibalise the very thing that helps support us, but we should be incentivising efforts to decarbonise our economy over time and create other industries and opportunities. Its not only sound environmental management, it's sound economic management. Take a look at the industries reliant on coal, they are trying to diversify themselves because they know that it has a finite lifespan.

For someone with a marketing background, ScoMo has done an appalling job of selling his position on this.

Do you honestly believe that if Australia stopped selling coal tomorrow that India, China, Japan et al would just plan to stop buying it?

Collectively across the world there is a plan to build 1600 further coal fired power stations... whether Australia could be arsed selling it or not, coal will be procured from somewhere, .

We should all get together and start our own clean energy company.
You put me and Ram in charge. Gary your the supervisor. SO chose the rest of your crew.
Gronk you will clean the toilets and strider does the coffee runs.
Elementary I want you to find a good job for.
Unsure what to do with HJ. Maybe he can fly the clean energy powered UFO.

Seriously you are just regurgitating the same lines. I get it. We should do nothing because China.

Meanwhile (in 2017) world investment in renewable sources of energy was $279.8 billion and China accounted for $126.6 billion. Yes they have a lot of mouths to feed and are in many ways still an emerging economy, but they do take global warming seriously.

Meanwhile Australia stands in the dark back lane saying smugly "do you think that the kids will just stop using ice just because we stop selling it ? It's about principles merkin.

Yet just three Chinese companies alone are also planning to build 700 further coal fired power stations both in China and other random countries around the World. Other entities are planning to build a further 900 coal fired power stations around the World. Do you think any of them care if Australia will sell them the coal they need or someone else will?

We should do whatever is right. Just like in life. You don't hurt someone cause someone else is ffs.

Plus the amount of work we would have going green would be huge. We should be pouring plenty in Solar and battery technology so other merkins can buy it from us.
Imagine being able to sell clean power to other nations.

Yep. China's Blue Sky policy has seen them change their priorities considerably and embrace global warming, air quality and environmental protection as serious issues. Even India are doing plenty on climate change.

Depends who they get it from. Think of it like a business. Right now they may have 10 countries to buy it off. If that went down too 1 or 2 guess what will happen? They will be paying 3 x the amount and it may be unaffordable.

What exactly is your point?

My point is that if that Australia went to 100% renewable energy and stopped mining and selling coal tomorrow, that it would little to affect on the impact of global warming or the amount of emission across the globe that is related to coal power.

Perhaps not even climate change. Home grown renewable energy will work out to be cheaper in the long run. Indeed if they break ground and innovate, then we could be buying their technology rather than the other way around.
