OT: Current Affairs and Politics

Serious question - since this is the only place in my life I come into contact with people with such a diverse range of view points on current affairs and politics - where does everyone get their news from...?

Online - if so, which news sites?
Radio - if so, which channel/s?
Social media - if so, which apps?
TV - if so, which channel/s?

If a ruling regime starts a war, it is putting its citizens at risk. Especially if it doesn’t have the resources to protect them, it puts those innocents at an even greater risk!!

Its interesting you make the point about diverse range of views on current affairs here and I feel the same, whether you agree or disagree, I like how this platform lets people expresses their views without some nuffys on Facebook or social media trying to bully them. Its sick how many people are doing it and its got worse in the last 12 months

Agree. If it wasn't for this site/thread, I wouldn't even come across or really be aware of the range of views about any particular issue. It's all good food for thought, even if no-one's minds here are truly changed by anyone else's thoughts.

While there's a bit of banter on here at times, you're right that it doesn't usually extend to bullying people about their views (whatever they might be) - whether majority/minority, widely held or less popular etc.

And as for me, I get my news from:

Online news sites - news.com.au, smh.com.au, abc.net.au, theguardian.com/au, and even dailymail.co.uk/auhome
Radio - not at all anymore
Social media - only use facebook occasionally, never done twitter/x or any others
TV - not as much these days, but usually only SBS or ABC

Predictable perhaps... and I reckon most people's answers will be different - and reflect (result in?) the diversity of views here.

Good on you mate. I'm glad. You should be able to express your views.

Whether we agree or disagree or have different political minds, at the end of the day, we should have respect and not go overboard with personal comments. That's the country I once grew up with. Argue about politics and sport but still share a beer or shake hands

Pretty piss poor from the government and DFAT the victims families found out via another victims family about the piss weak justice in Laos.

Penny "no idea" Wong had to grovel and apologise.

A monumental cock up all round.

And while the Aussies can't force justice in Laos. We have been pretty soft on there government.

Why not send a travel advisory out Australians not to travel there and put it on the black list really.

Laos need tourism and if we refuse to go it will destroy them.

Special Envoy on methanol deaths in Laos

  • Media release
12 February 2026
Today I have appointed Mr Pablo Kang as Special Envoy to continue our efforts for progress in the investigations into the methanol poisoning deaths of Australian citizens Holly Bowles and Bianca Jones.
Since their November 2024 deaths, the Albanese Government has been clear to the Lao authorities of the need for transparency and accountability.
We have consistently conveyed our expectations that charges should reflect the seriousness of the tragedy that killed Holly, Bianca and four other foreign nationals.
I have asked Mr Kang to depart for Laos as soon as possible this week and explore all avenues to progress the case.
Mr Kang heads the Southeast Asia Regional and Mainland Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He has previously served as Ambassador to Cambodia, Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates and High Commissioner to Vanuatu.
We understand the heartbreaking grief of the families of Holly and Bianca, which has been exacerbated by the delays and lack of transparency over the legal processes in Laos.
The Albanese Government will continue to press the Lao authorities on Holly and Bianca’s cases and will continue to support their families in their pursuit of justice.

So she calls out rich f**kers which yeah ok but the money she gave to charity was from her fans buying special tickets to her tour. So it's not coming from her pocket but the fans and she is taking credit? Bet she is also claiming the tax deductions as well...

I was living in Gower Street around the time the Sydney Olympics. There was a nice pizza place on the corner, that had a couple of naked statues. I went to the chiropracting place and the person straddled me to try a "special move" that might help my back... Good times.

There are some social media myths here.

She never claimed that it was HER money. She never claimed that it was 25% of her net worth. She never claimed that she took a ticket sales hit and donated her money. Blah Blah.

There seems to be a backlash because she shitted on billionaires and Musk in particular took offence. Billie of course did not care.

At the Eilish Tour ticket check out, people had the option to donate. This is no different to buying a virtual seat at the pink test or a VIP seat at Lady Gaga where a portion goes to AIDS.

The Innovator Award was for her music, nothing to do with the "changemaker" charity donations.

Yes she got people to donate but how much did she give again?

She is telling people to give their money away when she is giving other people's money away and taking credit for it.

How much of her actual money has she given away?

Difference is Glen McGrath isn't grand standing....

I don't see anything wrong with calling out billionaires, she's right, they shouldn't even be a thing.
