But that view doesn’t take into account the stark reality of the current situation and risks further escalation.

If it escalates, it's because Putin has chosen to escalate it. If Ukraine sends missiles into Russia, it's got a shit ton of catching up to do before it reaches anywhere near the number of missiles Russia has sent into Ukraine

It's all very well to talk of making the concessions needed to keep Putin happy, after all it's not like it's our land we're giving away.

I do wonder if merkins who think that appeasing Putin is the answer would indulge such thoughts if it was the lands of their country that were the price of appeasement

There’s plenty of justification if you weren’t too lazy to consider a different perspective. They poked the bear, and they’ll pay the price. He will, and should reclaim land from Ukraine where the overwhelming majority identify as Russian.
