In all honesty, I think that most Aussies are mainly centrist. It's just that media organisations, forums and the like purposely leave the gate open for ratings and views. Let's do a number on OZ Day. Let's have a go at ANZAC Day. Kings Birthday, why not? Easter and Christmas....open slather. This is part of the reason why merkins begin to steer *left or right. Just my opinion.

Yes, I agree.

Create some public outrage either way to sell advertising widgets.

Yeah, like I said, to me it's just a day off. If people wanna get all upset because some merkins don't wanna role play super patriot man for a day that's their f**king problem.
I'm more tolerant and at least interested in understanding the concerns of people who have a problem, even if I personally don't.

Easy to go full Rudd and smugly dismiss people, but it stops important conversations.

Why would you allow that kind of dumb shit to f**k with your day? It literally has zero effect if you ignore it.

And it's not even as if they're "banning" it, they're choosing not to celebrate it in their venues, hey free country and all that shit.

Should they be forced to celebrate it by a bunch of merkins who decide to get upset about it because woke is bad or some shit?

Dangerous to shut down conversation. You might not agree with people having a problem, but they have every right to express their concerns without being smugly dismissed.

That's my point. Nobody seems to have a clue on what day is best to represent that "unification day". So why make it January 1 when we're already celebrating New Year's Day? Better to make it September 1 and find justification somewhere/somehow...cause inevitably we'll end up with people cracking the shits because at dawn on the morning of "Unification Day" on January 1, there will be hundreds of pissed backpackers and locals sleeping off hangovers at beaches across the city and it'll be deemed "disrespectful" and around and around the outrage will go again...
Yep. As long as there is a remote link, it doesn't matter.

Bully for you mate, but all this confected outrage about shit is just that.

Whoa there laddie, who's talking about shutting down conversation? If I choose to ignore merkins getting riled up about dumb shit that's my business, i'm not demanding they be silenced, but by the same token am I under some social obligation to accept any given grievance as valid? You're free to express your grievances as you please, but there is no inherent right that they not be smugly dismissed, the world of ideas doesn't need f**king participation awards.

There are some serious issues around the day, but News Corp fawning outrage over a group of pubs not celebrating it, or last years effort of Woolies not selling tacky plastic patriotism is not one of them.

These things literally affect no one in any meaningful way, and I dare say we'd near all be oblivious to it if not for the likes of News Corp whipping up a storm in a teacup over it. You wanna talk about shutting down debate? what do you reckon these kind of stories and the way they are pitched does for debate?

Particularly given the story is based on the lie of the group not celebrating being sold as the group banning celebration.

But as we see from above, the group's been beaten into submission. Great result for freedom of expression that hey?
