Screw the Eels - build it now!

We're only going to have a decent crowd at the Tigers game anyway - might as well move the rest of this years games to ANZ and get the 3500 seats put it for next year.

WANDERERS chairman Lyall Gorman believes there is a "50-50" chance of adding extra seats to Parramatta Stadium before the A-League season kicks off in October, as memberships climb inexorably towards the figures mooted for a reluctant cap.

By yesterday Western Sydney had sold 14,285 memberships, all full-price season tickets, and the club is hurriedly working out a figure at which no more will be issued - somewhere between 15,000 and 16,000.

But that could rise if an extra 4000 seats are added to Parramatta Stadium, and the club is meeting almost daily with venue and government officials to make it happen.

The Parramatta Eels' last game at the stadium will be on the weekend of August 20. And with the NRL side certain not to make the finals, in theory it leaves a two-month window to put new seating in.

"It's a remarkable opportunity but it's not without its challenges," Gorman said yesterday.

"There are multiple questions to answer. Is a DA required? What kind of seating do we go for. How temporary?

"In the Bundesliga in Germany, they've had great success with standing active areas, where the seats fold up and effectively become rails. So that's one area to explore.

"But however it's done, it has to be the right long-term solution, pending any substantial upgrade of the stadium."

Gorman said that while A-League regulations stipulate only 200 seats have to be set aside for away fans, corporate requirements and the desire to allow new fans to attend games meant a cap would be required - possibly at 18,000 if the extra seating is installed.

"There is no doubt this club will outgrow the venue as it is," Gorman said, suggesting that "getting it to somewhere around 30,000 to 35,000 would be appropriate.

"But for now we're working with Venues NSW, the government and the stadium to see if it's possible to make changes before the start of next season and get those extra 4000 seats in."

Meanwhile, defender Reece Caira has been granted a release by the Wanderers to sign with Wellington Phoenix. The 20-year-old made only two appearances last season after joining from Aston Villa.

I wonder how long until the Wanderers staring thinking about taking Marquee games to a larger venue. Games like the Sydney Darby.

Still, well done to them and yes a successful A-League club is helping with the stadium. Gee if only we had thought about that in the late 90's or so. . . . .

Good question re moving games.
At this stage, they plan to stay at Parramatta and continue to lobby for further upgrades to further increase capacity to suit their needs.
Has Parra Eels EVER sold 14000 season tickets?

parra fans don't need to bother as they know the best games will get moved.

I wonder how many season tickets we would sell if there was a fear that people wouldn't get to see the games they wanted?

True, probably as many as the Wanderers, maybe more. The Wanderers have had to stay put for two reasons. One, the fans overwhelmingly dismissed ANZ for big games, and the club listened.
Secondly, the Wanderers are only just establishing and building a base of committed fans in a tough market. They needed to create a demand for tickets.
Parra already have that. They just need to start winning games.

Well we will see what happens for the Wests Tigers game, but in the fair dinkum department it didn't happen for many years we weren't going to ANZ so what is the difference then to now?

I think we are still missing the main ingredient for the tigers game and that is a competitive side. It has been a long season and I think even a few seasoned veterans have adjusted their priorities this year.

I am not expecting anywhere near a sellout, probably 10-12K.

Agreed we don't have a competitive side, and also that we will get no more than 12K for next Friday.

However back to the other point. How many Sell outs have we had at Parramatta stadium? Then of those sellouts how many were carried on FTA TV?
FTA TV is a big component of the number of bums on seats at big games.

Of those Sellouts, how many times did they happen in a single season?

Being honest, it is a very rare occasion when Parramatta fans can't walk up to the ticket window on game day and get a seat.

I don't know the Season ticket numbers today, but 2008 it was 5450 and in 2009 it was 3704, in 2010 it was 7451 and the last time it was published in 2011 when we had 7126. We have never had over 14,000 season ticket holders and until we do we will just be playing second fiddle to the WSW in regards to the stadium.

That's true Mark and it's sad that over the years the Eels have allowed it to get to this stage.
In the Eels defence though, the Wanderers are the sole identity in a non football competitive off season representing an area of 2 million people.
The Eels however, have 3 other NRL teams to compete with over probably a 3 million population area. We could be doing better though, no doubt.

yeah good points,
the fta tv would have an impact on those games but I believe the a-league has a friday night on fta this year and would expect the wanderers to be heavily promoted with the sort of interest they have.

Yep, we could be doing better.

In reality we have to compete with the Dogs, the Tigers and the Panthers that is true, but we are outclassed by the Dogs in terms of membership each year. we level peg with the tigers who have C-Town pretty much to themselves, the Panthers on the other hand, well we do better than them most years. We should be aiming at beating the Dogs, year in and year out.

Funnily enough, the Wanderers don't have that many free to air games on SBS next season. They have plenty of home games in their preferred time slot of Sat afternoon/evening.
Even the Grand Final replay in round 1 is not the SBS FTA TV game, even though it will be a guaranteed sell out at Blue Tongue. :?

I believe that was Ken Edwards' goal. :?

Interestingly it is the digital only second channel on a station most people would not watch most of the time and before digital TV most people had difficulties getting that channel.

Hopefully the membership manger he employed (from Richmond or the Western Bulldogs) is still on the case and will execute on next years memberships.

Here is hoping it will be easier and improved from this years debacle (apart from numbers)

I was going to start a thread a few weeks back about walk up prices, but may as well ask here, how come and when did walk up tickets start costing more than pre-bought tickets? At the Roosters game a few weeks back walk up prices for the Northern Terrace were 27 dollars which is 7 dollars more than what they cost through if you pre-buy them. Entry to the Southern Terrace was a whopping 35 dollars which is 15 dollars more than pre-bought tickets. In a time when we should be encouraging casual fans to attend games and boost our dwindling crowds these prices seemed outrageous and is a huge turn off for walk up ticket buyers.
