Ohhh yeah sorry got offtrack for a minute. Our Julie Bishop was a lawyer for CSR that defended cases brought against them by dying asbestos workers. Julies job included the long drawn out hearings where unfortunately the claimants sort of died off before a judgement could be made.

Some even called it a match plan by the companies to get the result they wanted. No claimant no case. Julie Bishop has a perfect memory, I am sure she can remember everything about the cases she defended.

I am a bit cynical when it comes to Julie and her memory. I don't even think she realises that she lives in a glass house and there are a huge amount of rocks lying around.

The NSW Labor Party is like the Mafia - a family business – whose members seek and procure employment at the taxpayers expense, preferably for life. It is amazing how many Cabinet Ministers, MPs, candidates, staffers and even members of the public service are related to each other. Nepotism rather than talent governs appointments.
It is as if the entire State apparatus operates like a sheltered workshop for Labor’s true believers.
Every time there is a scandal – and in NSW that is very often – you find the family connections laid bare. Someone is either the brother–in-law, sister-in-law, wife, son, husband, mistress or cousin of the accused.
Howes describes the Labor Party as having a more diverse group of people than the conservative parties. Except that they share the same surnames. Think of the three Ferguson brothers, whose father was deputy Premier of NSW, for example. Andrew Ferguson’s sister is married to NSW Energy Minister Paul Lynch while federal Minister for Infrastructure, Anthony Albonese is married to NSW Deputy Premier Carmel Tebbutt. And NSW ALP parliamentary secretary, Angela D’Amore, recently stripped of party membership after an adverse corruption finding, is the sister-in-law of ALP power broker, Joe Tripodi.
If this political inbreeding gets any closer, Cabinet meetings will be full of Ministers with two heads and three ears.
And of course there was ‘Labor’s Power Couple’, Belinda Neal, MHR for Robertson on the Central Coast and John Della Bosca, a pretender for the NSW premiership; both exited in disgrace.
In Howes’ case, his mother-in-law lost a factional fight with the hard left for preselection for the marginal federal seat of Richmond.
To date 21 Cabinet Ministers or MPs have announced they will not contest the coming NSW elections in March 2011. 'Family reasons’ rather than imminent defeat are trotted out as the excuse for stepping down. They won’t be missed.
Whether their replacements will be an improvement is arguable because they will be drawn from the same tainted source, by the same processes of rigged pre-selections or executive nepotism. You can’t get renewal without a purge of the present procedures and members.
Confessions of a Faceless Man is not about the NSW ALP – although its culture permeates the book – but about the last federal election which saw the Labor Party scrape home as a minority government on the backs of Independents and the Greens.
