FORMER rookie of the year Tim Smith is eyeing a return to the NRL with the Broncos.
The talented but troubled former Eel has been earmarked by the Broncos as a replacement for Darren Lockyer when the Australian captain pulls the plug on his stellar career.
After a short stint with Wigan in the English Super League, Smith was lured to the Queensland Cup to play with the Easts Tigers after discussions with the Broncos.
Easts are a feeder to the Broncos and The Daily Telegraph has been told
Smith will feature in the NRL next year should he get through the pre-season without a hitch.
Smith's manager Dave Riolo yesterday ruled out a move to the Sea Eagles with the club on the lookout for a playmaker now that Matt Orford has moved on.
"He is contracted to Easts for two years,'' Riolo said. "And he will be there for that time. Tim is just looking forward to getting back on the field.''
