Gary ballance been dropped for jonny bairstow. Bairstow was the keeper that replaced prior during the last ashes series and looked all at sea from i can remember so he must have improved or the poms have no good batsman in county cricket. Ian bell the sherminator has averaged 10 in his past 6 tests and will move up to 3. Good luck england

Bairstow has been killing it in county cricket, has 5 tons this season alone, so deserved his call up

Though I remember Graeme Hick killing it in county cricket too...

Their batting performance at Lord's was abysmal, so I suppose they had to do something, but this selection just looks as though it's throwing another mouse into the cheese loaded trap.
Another heavy defeat next test and they will be in serious panic mode.

More than impressive stats for Steve Smith at this stage of his career.
Is he good enough to keep them going, and become one of the greats?
I dunno. His technique is certainly a little different. But his confidence is extraordinary.
I just don't know what to make of his future, but he is giving me plenty of joy atm.

He seems to have that really good eye for picking up the ball as it leaves the bowlers hand so his confidence is high off the back of it. That extra millisecond seems to make all the difference between the greats and the next of the best. Every batsman, well almost everyone of them has a weak spot, a blind spot for picking up the ball in flight causing their hand eye coordination to go out of whack with the bat and feet experiencing this domino effect.

Hey Suity, has any bowler got the wood on this bloke yet? I ask cause I hardly watch cricket these days. In spite of his "weird" technique, had the opportunity the other night to watch him live including full highlights of his double century and he looked very impressive.

Dunno Casper.
I cannot recall any bowler in particular getting the better of him since he has hit his purple patch.
Time will tell.

The biggest threat to Smith will come from a fast left armer who can swing it (straightening the ball as he walks across his stumps). There aren't too many around at the moment, and two of them play for us.

Watching Steve Smith bat last Test was like watching Hayne in 2009, Usain Bolt (anytime) or Tiger Woods in his prime.

Sure is in a purple patch.

Moeen Ali has gotten his wicket a couple of times so far this series but mainly due to Smith actively and probably overly aggressively attacking Ali's bowling. I think he learnt from his dismissal in the first innings of the first Test by how he batted in the first innings of the second Test.

Insane run of form

with 3 ashes tests to come, then 3 tests each v NZ and WI at home, he could really continue his run into something never seen before.

Averages 40.00 in india (from 2 tests), would love him to bend them over in their own backyard next time we are there

3rd test starts tonight what do people think about hadds being left out for nevill. I think its a bit harsh considering he pulled out of the lords test for family reasons but in saying that his form over the last 18 months hasnt been great especially with the bat which wouldnt have helped his cause.

I'm a Had's fan but his form dictated that he be dropped and Neville has been in outstanding form in the past 12 months.

I didn't think they would drop Watson but they made the call and well overdue.

Our selectors have habit of hanging on to has been for far too long and good to see they finally grew some balls.

Haydos was the most obvious one, should have retired 2 years earlier that he did.
