OT: Tim Smith MOTM Performance for Wigan 1sts

Crucial contributions from their two newest talents won a game for Wigan that some of their more senior players had seemed intent on throwing away.

Shaun Ainscough only played because George Carmont went down with tonsillitis, but his four tries made it a total of 16 less than halfway through an astonishing debut season.
Sam Tomkins played more of a cameo role, but it was two exciting, instinctive runs from him that set up the tries which made the difference.
"He has superb prowess," said Brian Noble of Ainscough, the young winger. "But he is a work in progress."
That progress looked rapid indeed at Belle Vue. After Cameron Phelps had equalised Damien Blanch's opening try, Ainscough scored twice to give Wigan a 10-point lead. Both Wigan tries came from fine passes from Tim Smith, preferred to Tomkins in the line-up.
Wakefield began their fightback with a Danny Brough penalty – one of far too many that Wigan conceded. The visitors then made the first of their glaring errors, Pat Richards giving the ball away for Brough to score.
Martin Gleeson did the same thing 10 minutes later. Fortunately for Wigan, in between those two blemishes Ainscough completed his hat-trick on the end of a flowing move.
"Some of our execution was excellent, but we gave them every opportunity to beat us and we'll have to be a lot better in two weeks' time," said Noble, referring to the Challenge Cup tie between the clubs.
The ration for the second half began with Blanch – later to go off with a serious knee injury – outjumping Ainscough to force down Brough's kick. That put the Wildcats back in front, but they lost the lead when Phelps scored a soft try, latching on to a Smith kick.
Ironically, for a game filled with such hectic attacking action, it swung on one spell of convincing defence from the visitors, keeping out three sets of tackles on their own line.
Having survived that, Tomkins' superb run set up the position for Ainscough's fourth and another foray through a tiring defence prepared the way for Gleeson's clincher.
Wakefield: Blaymire; Blanch, S Gleeson, Atkins, Grix; Martin, Brough; Wilkes, Drew, Snitch, Pitts, Ferguson, Demetriou. Substitutes used: Sculthorpe, Obst, Henderson, Moore.
Wigan: Richards; Roberts, M Gleeson, Phelps, Ainscough; Smith, Leuluai; Fielden, Riddell, Coley, Hock, Bailey, O'Loughlin. Substitutes used: Paleaaesina, J Tomkins, Prescott, S Tomkins.
Referee: B Thaler (Castleford).

he played so well, what a game that was to watch. He looks really happy and looks like he is enjoying his football. You will notice, riddel always goes to smith instead of leulai.

After watching the highlight timmy seams to have got his running game back a bit which is a good thing for himself. But highlights are just that, I would like to see his general kicking and passing game in play.

I would be all for bringing Timmy back, but only on a small comtract (max 70K) or match payment. I would also have a strict regulations on him, councelling and possibly drinking condition to ensure he is up to it.

Another idea is to get timmy to move in with a player, maybe a Hindmarsh or Cayless type player (someone experianced to keep his head in). I must make the comment that he did not look over weight at all, and seams to possibly develop his game a little further. His short passing game looked very goood... and brought out a very good step to set up a try.

Not too sure Mrs Hindmarsh or Cayless would appreciate the idea of babysitting Tim Smith. Do you honestly think that he would go for all the restrictions you would have to place on him?The sooner people get the f**k over Tim Smith and move on the better!

Philips tell me one halfback you could get for that money, who is as young and has that skill level.

People want Head but he is just as much a gamble because he is injury prone and no-one is sure if they are up to0 that level.
People want Green but he is a gamble simply because he is unproven at the NRL level for a sustan period.
People want Monahgan who would cost 2-3 times more and has been out of the NRL for 3 years now.

Simply signing Smith is no more a risk than signing any halfs outside of Prince, Thurston and Campese. I would only do it as a last chance contract and under strick conditions... I dont see this as a problem IMO

Not babysitting, rather just a positive influence... I wouldn't force it on any player, but if timmy had some responsibility around a house (like house chores etc) it may actually help him mature.

I'm not going to go out and campaign to get timmy back, but i have no problem if anderson thought it was a good idea.

Tim may be playing well on the field but he is a basket case off the field. We dont need to inflict Tim Smith on our new image- an image of being a family club and looking for more sponsors.
It would be a disaster.
He is like Carney. A great footy player but dumb as dog sh*t.

Disagree Carney is agressive, Timmy was stupid. Carney has had many chances, Timmy never did anything relay wrong... just stupid. Carney broke the law many times, drink driving then drink driving with no licence then drinking and getting into fights. Timmy only ever got drunk and acted like an idiot, nothing illegal with acting like a tool.

The whole idea of bringing timmy back under heavy restrictions is to stop these types of events occuring. If timmy wants to come back, he will want to work on his mental health aswell.
