OT: Who saw this? Legal or illegal?

Illegal of course. Lifted past the horizontal, although MCKinnon contributed to his injury by tucking his head in.

Cam Smith needs to be cited for seriously questioning the penalty when a bloke goes off with a severe neck injury!

If Alex McKinnon doesn't tuck his head in, tackle is made, play on is called.

He went slightly past the horizontal, but barely and there have been worse tackles let go.

Unfortunately, this kind of injury was a long time coming. Any time a player was lifted, even slightly, they were tucking their heads in to get a penalty. This backfired for McKinnon.

Can smith needs to be flogged with a feather from a newly hatched chicken by Sadshark while watching the weather channel.
But he is a protected species...if it was a Shark that did it, 6-8 weeks on the sideline.

I watched it last night, I hope Alex gets well soon, the way he had landed was really the cause of his injuries, The tacke didn't help though.

Nothing to do with getting a penalty. It's to protect themselves. They're trained to do it.

Didn't protect him very well last night. Poor bloke, looks like he will be out for a while.

I didn't have a problem with what Cam Smith said, I hate the merkin but I thought his point was valid.

If you are looking like getting a tradition spear tackle, it would be protecting themselves, but there are tackle that are horizontal or barely beyond the horizontal.

If McKinnon didn't tuck, he would be fine right now.

If you think you're able to make the correct decision whether to tuck or not, in that same situation, 100% of the time, then you are kidding yourself.

McLean lifted and had a hand between the leg that constitutes an illegal tackle. What made things worse was the pressure the Bromwich brothers apllied not knowing McLean lifted past the horizontal.

The way I see it is that McKinnon was embracing himself for the impact however got it all wrong in where he positioned his head

i keep thinking that if he doesn't tuck his head then it MAY have been avoided. but it looked like he thought he was going further over, so made the decision to tuck his head which has made things so much worse

horrible thing to happen to anyone, and hope that he recovers

but i dont think we need a scapegoat to pay for what happens in a lot of weeks, although with very different results

Hand between the legs.

Lift and drive the player south headfirst.

Best way yet to do damage.

POPPA!!!! He was the master at it, Quigs. Saw him bury Dave Bolton with wunna those one day I'd thought he'd sent him thru to China.
No, folks. He wasn't a prop. He was lock that day. They numbered the forwards then opposite to what they do today. Just as Clive Churchill wore number 13 for Souths. Hadley said once that Clive was the best player ever to wear No.1 for Souths. No he wasn't, Ray. He wore no.13........lucky for his wingers `Whacka' Graves, Ian Moir, `Twinkletoes' Les Brennan, etc.

LEGAL THEN.....ILLEGAL NOW.

Pretty sure youll find the essence of tackling back then was on toughness and hurting the bloke.
Mostly one on one.
So the old spear tackle meant the ball carrier generally had an arm freem to break his fall.

The need to control the ruck in last 2 decades means gang tackling.
Turning blokes over, backwards and upside down.

Mckinnon had 2 guys wrapping him up while the third upended him.

A horrible helpless situation to be in.

A natural reflex to try and roll with it. Thus the head tucking.

Frenzy.

Really? Stood down? Pending what? Not to make light of what happened with McKinnon but if there was no injury it would of been lucky to draw 2 weeks.
