It sure is but I was thinking more of countries down under.
The money that comes out of origin lifts the game to elite sport level. You can’t shoot yourself in the foot and hope to keep walking. You’re not thinking this through properly.
Each origin is worth $30-40m. That’s now. When you no take it on the road to Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth the stadiums are full.
- Ticket revenue for MCG - $50 x 100,000 which is extremely cheap is $5m. Reality is that they get $10-15m.
- Sponsorship - $1-2m, Opportunity to be the biggest game in town across Australia.
- Media attention - we are covered in every paper, across Australia
- State govt revenue - $2-5m
- exclusive tv rights - $10m
- betting? 2-5m?
I’m a realist and the biggest supporter of the growth of the International game.
I’ve watched Catalans for years, watched Toulouse, watched crusaders in the old days. Watched Toronto’s games.
Are you telling me you want to throw away $30-50m for your view? It’s just short sighted.
Each game could make $100m. That’s what could occur if they take it to Amazon and sell it there.
Can you imagine what that money would do?
My Wishlist which has been years old - way before the nrl expressed interest:
- Takeover and run ESL - we need to grow the game further. France is being held back. Move to 14 teams. Add Bradford and Toulouse - need to retain London. They’re facing extinction again.
- Start a new team in NZ / start a new pacific island origin series
- Bring back the Bears - with Perth. Corporate Nth Sydney can not be ignored. We also win back the inner north - Mosman most important, this was lost to the swans. This connects us through to manly.
- Setup a draft to equalise the talent (haven’t thought this though fully but my team the dragons have not gone well for years)
- Force all teams to adopt regions in the country and in another country
- Grow the pacific nations - happening anyway - as 50% juniors are islanders
- Flex into South Africa and HK:Singapore
