Packer Signs 4 Year Deal

Surprised to see a few of you guys not naming Houston in your hypothetical teams for next season? He seems like a damn good player from what I have seen, and versatile between the front and back row... though probably more a back rower / lock in my view due to his tall, lanky build and high defensive work rate.

Houston's problem is he can't break the line, so he's useless as a wide running back rower. His big motor and build means he's ideal as a metre eater through the middle

Houso's form, as with most of the squad, was very good for the last two or three months. He really has played his best in the latter part of this year after spending some time out of firsts. He is best in the middle not on the edge. At 6 foot 4 it would be great if he could carry 112+ kilos but he doesn't seem to be able to put/keep it on??? He'd be great in the prop rotation at that weight.

Houston's not a bad player, but he has a very limited skill set. Imagine having 5 Houston's in your starting pack and 3 coming off the bench. They would cart the ball up all day and tackle to a standstill, but they wouldn't break a single tackle in 80 minutes and in the end the team would actually lose the battle up front because it was getting dominated in the ruck, and providing no attacking threat.

35 seconds in. Video of him giving your man Snowden a taste :thumn
Nice, now I'm excited about next year. I like a big front rower with a fire in the belly. Looks a lot bigger than 112 kilo's. I think him and Snowden when on form are going to be a formidable proposition up front , throw in Smith and Scott and teams are gonna know they are going home sore at the very least.

Glad it fell through. What a rubbish target even if it's a Bennett one. A stock standard NSW cup prop.

Brenton Lawrence is all the proof you need of why talent thrives in certain circumstances. I cannot get over the speed of that fella for a big unit. The mobility of Manly's forward game allows him to absolutely cause havoc at the line. A bolter for the roo tour if ever there was one. Hopefully we can get a similar impact from Russell Packer. Three years ago Packer would be a marquee signing but my understanding is Bennett wanted to sign him from the get go in 2011. Has a huge rap on him.

Lawrence always had the talent. Carty just could not see it.

Considering he didn't make 1st grade until age 26 I don't think Carty is the only one who couldn't see it

Lawrence was an Australain Schoolboy and Elliot was the Raiders coach at the time. Both Carty and Elliot are boneheads.

Good to see Toovs could see talent and is showing the calibre he always had. Amazing what boneheads can do in nearly destroying a promising career.
