Panthers want nrl to look at incentives for junior spending

the current incentives do little to reward clubs like the panthers. The system should allow something significant like being able to spend 1 million over the cap.

this would encourage more leagues clubs to spend more money on junior rugby league

There should be a variable club grant, not a fixed one. The salary cap should be the same for each club. I can't see it as an incentive from a cashflow perspective to say you can spend $1m more.

Instead Penrith should be getting say $20m in club grant and Melbourne/Roosters $4m. That will provide an incentive to develop their own juniors and invest in local areas.

Absolutely nothing burger article

of the 17m, 12.5 is player salaries, 10m of which is nrl salary which is given to them by the nrl same as every other club
The only disparity in player wages will come from clubs who don’t field teams in certain competitions (like the WNRL)

The other quoted expenses
Basic travel expenses are paid for by the nrl, anything above and beyond goes to their football cap

I can’t imagine why the panthers would be dramatically over spending over clubs on clothing and if so what tangible benefit they gain from it to help them “dominate”

the medical and premiums would largely be the same for all clubs over the long haul, some years you get lucky with injuries and surgeries and others you get banged…

I believe housing, meal + entertainment and educational allowances are also all capped and likely most if not all clubs are maxing these out

I get that Penrith want to toot their own horn and push an agenda that will benefit their club, and so they should! All clubs should, but none of those figures mean a damn thing and are almost certainly every other club are on par with them on that spending

the difference between Penrith and other clubs is the sit on top of the best rugby league junior district in the world
Huge participation numbers, a demographic that lends itself to players who are both extremely athletic and passionate
It’s not a spending thing, it’s a talent pool thing
And kudos to them for nurturing that talent, for many years they f**ked that all up and were not very good as a result
They’ve gone back to their strength, understood now they have an endless pipeline if they identify and develop from their region and are reaping the rewards now

But it’s got nothing to do with those expenses quoted in the story

all clubs have those squads so what’s different? Im guessing that $12.5mill includes the nrl players wages which makes the claim a real furphy if it does.

they also get a grant from nrl for their nswrl teams of around $600k. So that’s $13.6 of the $17.5mill being covered by the nrl!
Ie out of $146 mill ish year consolidated revenue the real spend to them is only $3.9million.

it’s also not jnr grassroots funding, it’s elite pathways funding that directly benefits the nrl panthers. In fact according to that article the very little money the LC was putting into jnr RL was removed and now all their only support is with “in kind” services.

what would be interesting would be to see which clubs have how many players that make their first grade debut for them. That is a better indicator of who is being succesful at bringing through young talent To first grade.

lol at claiming Waqa blake given he played jnrs in st George region and they signed him from the Perth sg ball team!

What would the NRL do for player development without Penrith doing it for them?
Surely they deserve some significant salary cap relief for the more than 30 players across the NRzl.

Given the size of the jnr base in penrith region it’s surprising only 27 nrl players currently come from there for other clubs. Not a very good return really.

Of the 17 who won the GF last year, 6 came right through the Panthers system from a young age, including Nathan Cleary who came with his father aged 13, another 6 were scouted from country/NZ/Pacific islands as teenagers and provided accommodation, Kikau was signed from the Cowboys who had put 2 years into him, and subsequently we put another 2 years into him, and the remaining 4 were signed as more or less established first graders who had debuted elsewhere but were looking for an opportunity. None of the last group (Koroisau, Momirovski, Capewell and Sorensen) were big money signings (Koroisau in the $500k region), all of them made significant career progress in our system so it could be argued even the imports were to some degree developed into better players by us. All of them are worth more now than they were bought for, and 3 of the 4 have taken advantage of this by signing elsewhere.

What the Roosters/Storm do is more slanted towards the second group and certainly the third, since they have very few (Roosters) or no (Storm) juniors in their own area of domicile. The above grants breakup certainly wouldn't be equitable, and with Panthers having won 89% of matches in the past two and a bit seasons, there is not a chance the NRL are going to alter the balance in our favour at this point in time. But they do need to find a way of getting all clubs to pull their weight in player development, which isn't happening now. The Roosters and Storm are not the problem in this regard. The problem clubs can mostly be found near the bottom of the table.

Penrith went out and developed it especially in Bathurst.

other clubs are neglecting their eg parra and tigers

others like the storm have basically no juniors

It says 50 in the article. Add to that the around 25 in our top 30, that's 75 out of 480. Not so bad, considering there are 16 clubs. I know we have a few in Super League but its not that many. The reason Penrith have to scout is because a junior league with a catchment of half a million people cannot produce 25 NRL standard players, no matter where it is. And even if it could, it is not going to produce them in every position on the field.

there’s 31 on that list, 5 in SL and one who was signed from perth. That makes 25 on that list are penrith region or jnr team nrl players.

Lots of clubs including my own are pouring money and resources into regional NSW regions like Bathurst.
You guys aren't special in that regard.

Again, the panthers current sitaution is not a matter of investment, it's a matter of sitting on the best junior catchment area for RL in the world. So long as Penrith have their in house development and identification processes in order they should never miss the 8.

Why should you guys not get benefit of it?

Where do the Dogs or Parra develop? They too have large catchments

Look im all for anything that helps my club... id be thrilled as a raiders fan.

Give us alllll the benefits, lord f**king knows we need anything we can get, and frankly the Raiders are doing a SHIT ton of work in regional areas and they've being drastically outspent and out resourced by AFL scouts and promotions... we need help maintaining the Riverina area, we cant shoulder the burden alone and surrender that area to the AFL without assistance or at the very least, incentives to keep fighting the good fight and we'd do pretty well out of some sort of system like that...

but at some point you have to be honest with yourself, and that article is a steaming pile of dog shit. Any idiot with 3 brain cells can see how flawed that shit is... and it's EXTREMELY flawed. Re: see all the posts above.

I trust the figures. It is 2019 when we had sides in the Andrew Johns and Laurie Daley cups.

Those figures used to get shock value as the media does

I trust the figures too, just the figures dont tell the story they're telling you they tell!0
those figures, as outlined above, by anyone with a functioning brain, are basic costs, they're BAU... the quoted 17m figure will not, based on their own information be drastically different to any other club relative

the panthers arent suddenly dominant because they're drastically outspending other clubs to achieve it, which requires offsetting advantages. It's a bullshit arguement. And their own numbers as per that article show it as such. Its as simple as that

Pretty much this. The disappointing part is there is a decent story in there somewhere, but the hyperbole over the figures and a few questionable additions to the player list turns it into a turd.
