I'd rather Meaney too.. or Faalago over Sloan.. but we wont get those 2 out of melbourne.. its a fine art here.. we need to take some risks to rebuild our roster and attract some names to improve us in 2024.. papa not my first choice either by any stretch.. but it may end up an opportunity that works for all parties.. they get some cap back and we get an actual rep quality leader.. anyway we shall see.. flanos problem not ours lol.

I don't think it's a dumb signing, personally. Although we are increasingly desperate. It's risky, but if successful the reward is exponential.

It's a position we need to strengthen - one of the most important on the field.
A rep-calibre player/a premiership winner/a Clive Churchill medallist. These things don't grow on trees and you need them to win comps.
At his best he's one of the best players (not just fullbacks) in the world.
Plus he's a marketable face, seemingly universally loved across the game. Even I like him - and I hate both the Storm and mullets!

Well worth the risk imo

Papy and Sloan similar attacking skills. Sloan defensively suss, how is Papy in the tackle department. Stats show 81% efficiency from a small sample size of three games last season. That is 10 points more than Sloan.

Despite Papys last four truncated seasons due to injury he was still Melbourne Storm Back of the Year: 2020, 2021, 2022, on top of his greatest honor, the Clive Churchill Medal in 2020. He is also a Junior Kangaroo. If fit and price suits us, go for him.

Flanagan may feel as fullback needs a specialist to master many skills that Sloan has struggled somewhat in that respect, namely in the defense department, tackling and organization specially. So if a specialist f/b was to come on the market he may jump at him.

We don't need Paps we need a half, a prop or two, a 2nd rower that can tackle and pass and some speedy wing/centre options.
He's great on his day but he also has averaged just 10 games a year over the last 3 years, 1 try per game, 1 try assist every second game and an average 78% tackle efficiency over the last 3 years. For what you'd have to pay him it's just not viable. Not just because he's injury prone but also because we're the Dragons not the Storm and that's relevant on a whole bunch of levels.
Flanno said no panic buying and this fits that bill.

Forget Paps as I feel Connor Treacy will be Flanno's first option and he will go hard for him. He ticks all the boxes for him, a sharks boy and a close family friend.
So we go from one coach that played favorites to another. He is a half, not fullback. Flanagan has his boy here, Hunt continues to stink up the place so why does he want another half, unless you are talking about an Amone 5/8 replacement. If he avoids prison time Flanno may still want him as our long term 5/8.

Tracey hasn't played in the halves for a while. His best football in the top grade has been played at fullback, where he has done a great job. He has filled in in the halves, centre and wing as well, and has done really well everywhere he has played, not just done an admirable job. He is more than capable of being a really good player in multiple positions, this year at fullback he killed it and many sharks supporters want to see him as their fullback over Kennedy. Him being listed as a half on a website or whatever isn't entirely accurate. Plus, we probably do need another back up half plus Tracey
