We don't need Paps we need a half, a prop or two, a 2nd rower that can tackle and pass and some speedy wing/centre options.
He's great on his day but he also has averaged just 10 games a year over the last 3 years, 1 try per game, 1 try assist every second game and an average 78% tackle efficiency over the last 3 years. For what you'd have to pay him it's just not viable. Not just because he's injury prone but also because we're the Dragons not the Storm and that's relevant on a whole bunch of levels.
Flanno said no panic buying and this fits that bill.
People on this forum seem weirdly fixated on the tackle efficiency stat

Completed tackles don't always mean a better defender, especially for backs. I'll give you 2 broad examples.

An edge forward might rush up in defence on an opponent playmaker to "get in his face". With a bit of quick footwork the playmaker may beat the tackle one-on-one, but due to being rushed and forced to move by that edge forward, the attack still breaks down and he's tackled by someone else. This is successful defence - but recorded as a missed tackle, and subtracted from his efficiency

Example 2. Matt Feagai is defending on his wing - misreads the attack and the ball sails wide to an unmarked attacker to score without Feagai laying a hand on him. Unsuccessful defence, with no missed tackle recorded by Feagai

Not really my point but thanks for the footy lesson.

Dufty was the master of 'supervising' tries being scored from a safe distance.. and hence not being guilty of a missed tackle.. Sloan isnt as bad but often not even in the frame to attempt a tackle.

Give me a bloke who throws his body @ a 10% chance of stopping a try.. and bugger the stats.

Didn't the Couchmen come through the grades as props ?
In their interview they said they were 2nd rowers.. so I dunno if Griffin or someone worked out that their best longterm fit was as props.. but ill just back Flanno to figure it out.. its been confusing me all year.

Rally bummed about missing Curran, was such a good fit for our squad.. As for papa.. I dont even have an opinion, if its a good $ offer then maybe, whatever the coach wants to do tbh.. the pluses with Paps is he's a) marketable so we are an easier sell for other players, and b) he probably improves our teams defence with his organisational skills at the back and c) he could actually be a club captain, we need some heads like that in the squad... we dont heave leaders.

This assumes he stays on the field ofcourse..

If only there was a stat for failed intercept attempts that led to tries. Dufty would have ranked supreme. Nevertheless I still fondly remember his broken play running and bullet cut out pass.

Reece Walsh is the anti-Dufty. He piles up the missed tackle stat because he busts his ass every time to get there

Flanno said we weren't going to panic buy. Doesn't look like we're going to any-other-sort-of-buy either.

Papiz could be a five eight in the future. Like alot fullbacks
Sloan too or half. He already has the ball skills and vision, but can Flanagan see it. I say his immediate priorities before season starts are a session with a psychologist then onto the tackle bags, into the gym, then start him in Reggies while he works on his match fitness.
